BOSTON – A second-place result in the Second Varsity 8 highlighted the Boston University women's rowing program's races against Harvard-Radcliffe, Northeastern, and Dartmouth on Saturday morning on the Charles River.
Periodic rain showers dissipated before BU's first race, though a cross-headwind developed to about 12 miles per hour throughout the course of the morning.
In the Varsity 8, the Terriers, coxed by
Audrey Lucerne and stroked by
Mariana Forehand, trailed third-place Northeastern by seven seats at the Mass. Ave. Bridge. The Huskies pulled away, but the Terriers gained seats on the Big Green in the final 500 meters. However, Dartmouth fended off BU by about two seats as the latter placed fourth in 6:58.5.
BU's Second Varsity 8, coxed by
Trisha Jaggi and stroked by
Ada Giraldo, jumped out to a bow ball lead over Radcliffe in the first 500 meters. Harvard was ahead by six seats halfway through, but the Terriers comfortably sat in second over the Huskies by seven seats, gradually building a half-length of open water and one length behind Radcliffe to finish second with a time of 7:05.7.
The Varsity 4 followed up as BU, coxed by
Alex Aravides and stroked by
Skyler Fong, matched with Northeastern and Dartmouth as Radcliffe bolted to open water early. After falling behind early, the Terriers maintained a three-seat distance on the second-place Huskies until the last 250 meters, when the Big Green stormed away to finish third by four seats. BU was fourth, recording a time of 7:56.2.
In the Second Varsity 4, the Terriers, coxed by
Maya Wiisanen and stroked by
Cady Messimer, were fourth with a time of 8:44.0.
BU's Third Varsity 8, coxed by
Valeria Lizarraga Ramirez and stroked by
Julia Kraski, maintained a seven-seat distance on third-place Dartmouth, but the Big Green pulled away to send the Terriers to a fourth-place result in a time of 7:26.5.
The Terriers will rematch Northeastern next week with the Council Cup at stake and race Rhode Island as well on Saturday (April 13) on the Charles River.
