BOSTON – The Boston University men's swimming and diving team ignited the Terrier Invite with five top-three performances during the A Finals on Friday (Nov. 21) at the FitRec Competition Pool, the first of the three-day event.
Sophomore Giovanni Sullo snagged the victory in the 500 freestyle, winning handily in 4:23.70, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of last year's champion in the event, Ben Huffman of Boston College.
BU's evening began with 200 freestyle relay, where a close contest with Boston College saw the Terrier quartet place second in 1:20.34, less than five-tenths behind the Eagles.
Senior Tony Ponomarev joined junior Henry Dvorak as well as freshmen Dimitri Melnikov and Nathan Lee in the 400 medley relay. That group was second in 3:15.09 only to Boston College, who set a pool record in 3:14.17.
Ponomarev was one of four Terrier qualifiers in the 200 IM, following through with a 1:49.78 in the 200 individual medley that placed third.
Earlier that day, two Terriers earned top-five results in the 1-meter dive. Freshman Ethan Wong was third with a 311.4 score while junior Zein Mahana was fifth at 303.3.
Day two of the Terrier Invite begins with the preliminary round at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 22). The finals are set for 6 p.m.
