February 24, 2026 | Men's Swimming & Diving
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Three members of the Boston University men's swimming & diving teams became first-time All-Patriot League honorees on Tuesday as the league office announced that senior Tony Ponomarev and sophomores Charlie Nenchev and Giovanni Sullo were selected to the second team.
The trio pushed the Terriers to the biggest point increase of any team at last week's Patriot League Championships, posting 936 points, marking a 309.5-point improvement.
Ponomarev closed his career with a strong performance, qualifying for three A finals to collect top-eight finishes in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke races as well as the 400 individual medley to collect a team-best 68 points. He leaves his mark in the BU record books with top-five times in all three events, including the school record in the 200 backstroke.
Nenchev had a breakout meet, finishing second on the squad in points with 63 while collecting his first PL medal with a bronze in the 800-yard freestyle relay, which resulted in the team's first relay podium in seven years. He placed sixth in the 100 backstroke, seventh in the 200 freestyle and 11th in the 100 freestyle. He is now in the program's top four in all three events.
Sullo found himself on the PL 1650 freestyle podium for the second time in as many years, replicating his bronze effort from his freshman year. He finished with 59 points, adding a 10th-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a 12th-place showing in the 400 IM. He closes the year ranked in the program's top four in those three events as well as the 1000 freestyle.
