March 20, 2025 | Men's Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its seasonal regional awards for the indoor track & field season on Thursday, naming Boston University men's track & field graduate student Foster Malleck as Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year and assistant coach Jon Molz as Men's Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Malleck ran to a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile, becoming the first Terrier since 2014 to collect First Team All-America honors after Rich Peters finished fourth in the mile. The Kitchener, Ontario native also won Patriot League titles in the mile and 3000m and set the BU record in the mile with a 3:53.82 time this year. His time is 23rd in NCAA D1 all time and was the 16th-ranked time in the NCAA this season. On top of that, Malleck's six points from his third-place finish placed the Terriers 36th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the best place of a Northeast school this year.
Molz was Malleck's primary coach on the distance squad this season and helped him reach the NCAA final in the mile. At the Patriot League Championships, Molz coached his team to 59 of BU's 93 points — the second-most distance points of any team at the meet. Molz's mile squad was ranked 23rd in NCAA D1 and his 800m squad ranked 33rd in NCAA D1. Both were second in the Northeast.
Malleck next heads to the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China on March 21, where he will run in the 1500m prelims at 7:18 ET. For Molz and the Terriers, they transition to the outdoor season beginning with the USF Alumni Invite Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22.
