
Athletics Celebrates Best of BU at 2024-25 Scarlet & White Honors

Paul Lewis Student-Athlete Service Award
Nina Gulbransen (Women's Tennis)
• Captain on the 2025 Patriot League championship team and member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy
• Recipient of the Scarlet Key award after spending the summer as a Congressional intern for U.S. Representative Seth Moulton (MA)
• Currently serving on the Boston University Student Government as the Deputy Director of Social Advocacy with an emphasis on ensuring that every student thrives at BU
• Interned with the City of Boston Mayor's commission for persons with disabilities and in the Boston Parks and Recreation division
• Previously served as a fellow for "Her Bold Move" where she helped to bolster the campaigns of female and LGBTQIA+ candidates
John B. Simpson Award (seniors who have demonstrated enthusiasm and leadership)
Andrew Wike (Men's Soccer)
• Served as a captain this past fall, helping lead the Terriers to their second consecutive Patriot League regular season title
• Posted a 4-2-6 record in his fifth season alongside a .696 save percentage and 1.28 goals against average
• Claimed shutouts against then-No. 9 New Hampshire, Bucknell, Colgate and Navy after receiving the Male Unsung Hero honor at the 2024 awards ceremony
• Excelled in the classroom with a 3.42 undergrad GPA and 3.85 grad GPA to earn his first Academic All-PL award
Maggie Hanzel (Women's Ice Hockey)
• Served as an assistant captain and helped BU win its sixth overall Hockey East title and first in 10 years
• Made 36 appearances and set career highs in both points (13) and assists (11) with two goals, including the game-winning goal at New Hampshire
• Finished the season with a program-high +13
• Named a three-time Hockey All-Academic Team honoree
E. Ray Speare Award (Top senior male scholar-athlete)
Tucker Thomas (Men's Rowing)
• Majoring in religion in the College of Arts and Sciences with a 3.68 GPA
• Currently sitting in the two-seat on the Varsity 8 boat after earning 2024 IRCA Comeback Athlete of the Year and Empacher-IRCA Scholar-Athlete recognition
• Sat in the two-seat on the Second Varsity 8 boat that finished 10th in the nation at the 2024 IRA Championship after helping the Third Varsity 8 place seventh at the 2022 IRA Championship in the bow seat
• Represented Team USA in Men's U23 Double
Gretchen Schuyler Award (Top senior female scholar-athlete)
Christy Chen (Women's Golf)
• Owns a 3.82 GPA in College of Arts and Sciences dual-degree economics program
• Two-time Patriot League Golfer of the Year and 2023 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year who qualified for the 2023 NCAA Regionals
• Four-time All-PL honoree and two-time Academic All-PL member
• Won seven individual titles during her time at BU
Mildred Barnes Award (Top female athlete) and Woman of the Year
Vera Sjöberg (Women's Cross Country, Track & Field)
• Earned 2025 All-America First Team honors by finishing eighth in the indoor mile at the NCAA Championships with a program record time of 4:35.34 that topped 1991 NCAA indoor champion Jennifer Lanctot's 4:35.65
• Become the fourth indoor first teamer in Patriot League history and just the second this century
• Helped lead BU to the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field title after earning both Track Athlete of the Meet and the highest points scorer honors thanks to gold medal performances in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m
• One of two Swedish runners to qualify for the 1500m at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships (March 21-23) in China
• Repeated as the PL Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year with a 3.97 GPA majoring in English
• Also repeated as the PL Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year after winning the 2024 PL individual title
• Competed individually at the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships and recorded the best result by a Terrier since 2008 with a 42nd-place finish in 20:05.0
Mickey Cochrane Award (Top male athlete)
Foster Malleck (Men's Cross Country, Track & Field)
• First long distance runner in 11 years to earn the Mickey Cochrane Award, as Malleck and Mildred Barnes Award recipient Vera Sjöberg became the first Track & Field duo to sweep the top BU athlete honors since 1983
• Finished third in the indoor mile at the 2025 NCAA Championships with a time of 3:54.42 for the program's best finish since Rich Peters took second at the 2012 NCAAs
• Collected First Team All-America honors for his performance, marking the Terriers' first All-America recognition since Peters earned the award in 2014
• Capped his career as a Terrier as a six-time Patriot League track & field champion, the 2025 PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a 10-time All-PL selection
• Represented Team Canada at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships (March 21-23) in China

Rookie of the Year - Male: Cole Hutson (Men's Ice Hockey), Female: Bridget Carr (Women's Soccer)
Win of the Year - Women's Ice Hockey captured its first Hockey East title in 10 years with a 3-2 overtime victory over Northeastern
Highlight of the Year - Morgan Weaver (Women's Soccer) sent the PL championship game to overtime with a long range strike off the post in the 86th minute that helped the Terriers eventually win a 10-round penalty kick shootout and hoist the trophy
Moment of the Year - Sydney Healey (Women's Ice Hockey) scored the overtime goal to help BU defeat Northeastern and earn its first Hockey East tournament title since 2015
- Brian Maurer (COM'07) served as emcee for the evening while Kyomi Apalit (softball), Otto Landrum (basketball) and Ani FitzGerald (ice hockey) hosted the Student-Athlete Choice Awards portion of the event.
