152nd BU Commencement Includes 152 Student-Athletes
May 19, 2025 | General
BOSTON – A total of 152 student-athletes participated in graduation ceremonies on Sunday as part of Boston University's 152nd commencement exercises.
BU alum Emily Deschanel (CFA '98), best known for her 12-year run as Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan on the Fox crime series Bones, delivered the All-University commencement speech before 4,000 BU graduates and more than 20,000 guests, as well as an overflow crowd at nearby Agganis Arena, on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. It was the largest University commencement crowd in 30 years, as the Class of 2025 was one of the largest graduating classes in BU history.
Following all of the festivities, student-athletes with friends and family gathered together at the BU Softball Field for a reception hosted by Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello.
The seniors of the men's rowing and softball teams were unable to attend due to competing at Eastern Sprints and NCAA Regionals, respectively. However, the University hosted an intimate ceremony for those student-athletes and their families on Monday morning. President Melissa Gilliam joined Amie Grills, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, in delivering a meaningful message to those in attendance.
In addition, former men's basketball player and current Illinois secretary of state Alexi Giannoulias delivered the convocation speech to the economics department's Class of 2025. To listen to his speech, click here and go to the 51:50 mark of the video at the bottom of the page.
