Student-athletes choose BU because they know that here, they’ll receive a world-class education and have multiple opportunities to engage in meaningful service.
Scholarships are the core around which Boston University’s athletics programs are built. They enable our athletes to give more attention to study and competition and less to concerns about making ends meet for themselves and their families. They help them graduate from BU without an excessive debt burden. And they are enormously important in recruiting. Talented players may well choose another school—potentially a rival—if BU can’t meet or exceed that school’s financial aid package.
Endowed Scholarships: For Long-Term Success
For long-term success in athletics, endowed scholarships are key. They are the foundation that guarantees we will be able to attract talented student-athletes who may be otherwise unable to afford to attend BU or might be lured away by bigger and better scholarship offers.
Each year, Endowed Scholarship donors receive notification of their chosen recipient, as well as a stewardship report updating them on the fund’s performance, scholarship award, and recipient. Donors will also be invited to the Athletics Leaders Celebration to meet their recipient and be recognized for their support.

Summer Term Scholarships
For our student-athletes who train and compete throughout the academic year, taking some classes in the summer is a practical and attractive option. At the moment, though, this choice comes with a price: traditional scholarships do not cover summer classes.
We are confident that our student-athletes will benefit greatly from knowing that they can take summer courses without worrying about how they and their families will pay for them. And without a doubt, sponsoring a summer-term scholarship will give BU a recruiting edge against other top teams.
The Century Challenge: An Unprecedented Opportunity
BU’s history of inclusion for all is mirrored in President Brown’s own challenge proposal: The Century Challenge. While there is no evidence of a challenge like it at any other university, the initial response has already demonstrated its promise. This unique philanthropic effort will greatly increase scholarship support and keep our doors open to the best and brightest students from around the world.
If you establish an endowed scholarship fund of $100,000 or greater—a scholarship that will bear the name of your choosing—BU will match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the income distributed from your fund for scholarship purposes for a period of 100 years following the fund’s activation. We will provide these matching funds for the first $100 million of endowment support pledged to the Century Challenge.
