Ole Miss Staves Off Late Rally Attempt to Outlast Softball in NCAA Regional Opener, 8-6
May 15, 2026 | Softball
The Terriers (46-14) led the Rebels (35-24) in their first-ever meeting by two after the top of the first, but Ole Miss scored one in the bottom half and later plated seven in the third against three different pitchers to take control of the contest. BU never quit, however, and facing a five-run deficit in the seventh, recorded three RBI hits before a double play ended the rally with two Terriers left in scoring position.
Sophomore Camryn Lyons led the offense successfully reaching base four times with a pair of RBI hits and a walk. Seniors Brooke Deppiesse and Megan Coyle keyed the seventh-inning comeback attempt delivering solo homers and scored two runs apiece. Junior Kylie Doherty, sophomore Kieren McHugh and junior Kyomi Apalit also earned a hit in the contest.
BU doubled Ole Miss in extra-base hits, 4-2, and posted a 6-1 advantage in walks but was undone by a season-worst five hit-by-pitches, including three in the game-changing third. In the circle, senior Kasey Ricard (32-7) totaled four strikeouts through two innings of work before the Rebels took the lead, and sophomore Ava Johnson pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to help give the Terriers a chance to rally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Deppiesse, Coyle and junior Sophie Naivar all earned a walk in the top of the first to load the bases with one out and force a pitching change.
- Lyons greeted the new Rebel pitcher by reaching over the plate to knock the ball into the opposite field to score Deppiesse before a sac fly by freshman Irys Kline made it 2-0.
- OIe Miss quickly got a run back in the bottom half by loading the bases on two singles and a hit-by-pitch to set up a two-out slow-enough grounder to short before striking out to Ricard.
- In the second, after junior Kyomi Apalit led off with a single and reached as far as third, Ricard struck out the side to maintain the 2-1 advantage.
- The Terriers had another opportunity to extend the lead in the third thanks to a hit-by-pitch and walk, but Ole Miss ended the threat on a grounder to first.
- The Rebels' bats then heated up with a homer, single and two-run blast against Ricard to prompt the first of three pitching changes in the inning.
- Entering the contest in relief, senior Haley Ganino started off by earning a line out to second, but Ole Miss was able to remain on the attack with a pair of perfectly-placed bloop hits to help set up a two-run single to left.
- The Rebels then loaded the bases against sophomore Danika Nell on a walk and shortly thereafter with two outs scored two more runs on hit-by-pitches.
- After Johnson earned a fly out to center to help and pitched a scoreless fourth to help avoid a run-rule decision, Doherty started the fifth with a single up the middle and cut the deficit to 8-3 by scoring on Lyons' RBI ground-rule double.
- With one more chance to rally, Deppiesse led off the seventh with a homer before Coyle followed suit with a one-out blast to make it an 8-5 game.
- After senior Aimee Metz worked a walk and advanced to second on Lyons' single, McHugh delivered a one-out RBI double to put the game-tying run at second.
- The Rebels though escaped with a double play on a grounder to the pitcher with the force at first and then tag on McHugh at second, as she was leaning too far toward third.
- Batting 3-for-3 with a walk, Lyons has now successfully reached base eight straight times in NCAA regional action after hitting 4-for-4 against Omaha in an elimination game last season that also included an RBI double.
- Deppiesse and Coyle's homers helped BU set a single-season program record for homers at 66, surpassing the 2007 squad's 65 total.
- The Terriers also set single-season records for hits (532) and doubles (90). BU previously had 531 hits in 2024 and 88 doubles in the 2014.
- Coyle moved up to a tie-for-third in single-season homers at 13 alongside Doherty's 2025 campaign.
- Thanks to her seventh homer of the year, Deppiesse now owns 264 career hits, tied for second most ever alongside Kayla Roncin ('24), Jayme Mask ('14) and April Setterlund ('11).
- Having now pitched 838.2 career innings, Ricard needs five more outs to set a new BU record. With a program-best 924 career strikeouts, she needs five more to set a new Patriot League record.
- BU (established in 1839) and Ole Miss (established in 1844) faced off in a head-to-head matchup in any sport for the first time ever.
- The Terriers are now 0-15 all-time in the opening game of the NCAA tournament with eight losses by three runs or less. In opening-round matchups against the SEC, BU previously came up just short to Mississippi State (3-1) in 2021, No. 5 national-seeded Florida (3-0) in 2019 and Arkansas (3-2) in 2012.
- On Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET, BU will face fourth-seeded Marist, who dropped a 10-3 decision to No. 11 national seed Texas Tech.
- The Terriers will take on the reigning MAAC champion in the NCAA tournament for the first time since eliminating Iona, 4-3, in a 13-inning thriller at the 2012 Cal-Berkeley Regional.
- The Red Foxes own a 4-2 series lead, but the Terriers won the last contest in 2020 with a 2-0 victory at a multi-team event hosted by Arkansas.
