Terriers Open PL Tournament with 7-3 Win over Lafayette
May 7, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON - Sophomore Danika Nell and senior Haley Ganino combined for 6.2 scoreless innings in the circle and junior Kyomi Apalit recorded four RBIs to help lead the top-seeded Boston University softball team to a 7-3 victory over fourth-seeded Lafayette in the opening game of the 2026 Patriot League Tournament at BU Softball Field.
BU (44-13) trailed Lafayette (16-35) by three after the top of the first, but the Terriers scored twice in the third and twice more in the fourth to go ahead for good. Apalit added some insurance with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to ensure that BU extended its win streak to 10 games.
Nell relieved starter Kasey Ricard in the top of the first and scattered three hits while striking out two. Ganino entered the game in the top of the fifth inning and allowed just two batters to reach, both via singles, while also recording two strikeouts in 3.0 IP.
The Terriers combined to force Lafayette's pitching staff into 11 walks, including five in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Livia Christopher led the Terriers with two hits and classmate Sophie Naivar reached base four times, going 1-for-1 with three walks and scoring two runs. Senior Megan Coyle hit her 12th homer of the season and sophomore Camryn Lyons drove in the other run thanks to one of her two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lafayette scored three times in the top of the first thanks to a two-run homer and an RBI double that knocked Ricard from the contest.
- BU threatened in its half of the opening frame thanks to a walk and a two-out ground rule double, but Marisa Powell recorded her third strikeout of the inning to escape the jam with her three-run lead intact.
- Nell tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second but the Terriers' two-out rally came up empty in the bottom half and Lafayette maintained its 3-0 advantage.
- In the top of the third, the Leopards had runners at second and third with nobody out, but Nell cleanly fielded a comebacker to get the first out before Christopher tracked down a wild pitch by Nell and cut down Dani Rosner at the plate for the second out.
- Lafayette then earned a two-out walk but Nell induced a flyout to center to get out of the jam unscathed.
- The Terriers got two runs back in the bottom of the third, beginning with Coyle's homer which took a fortunate bounce off a Lafayette glove and over the fence.
- Naivar followed with a walk and then advanced to third after a single and a wild pitch.
- Lyons earned a walk to load the bases with one out, but new pitcher Jordan Goedel induced a grounder to the shortstop, who got the lead runner at the plate.
- Christopher then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing one more run to score.
- The Terriers took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth despite recording zero hits, as five different batters drew a walk to help BU secure a 4-3 advantage.
- That's how the score stood until the bottom of the sixth when Apalit crushed a three-run home run to left field.
- Ganino pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to secure the victory.
- BU will face the winner of Thursday's second game of the day between second-seeded Colgate and third-seeded Army West Point.
- First pitch of Thursday is scheduled for 11 a.m.
