Softball Advances to PL Championship Round with 3-1 Win over Army West Point
May 8, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON - The top-seeded Boston University softball team advanced to the championship round of the 2026 Patriot League Tournament with a 3-1 victory over third-seeded Army West Point on Thursday at BU Softball Field.
BU (45-13) never trailed Army (33-24), scoring in the top of the first and adding a pair of runs in the top of the third to push its win streak to 11 games. Senior Kasey Ricard was terrific in a record-setting day in the circle, as her fifth strikeout of the contest was also her 911th career K, which is a new program record. Ricard finished her complete game with seven strikeouts against zero walks while scattering just six hits.
Junior Kyomi Apalit went 2-for-2 with an RBI while sophomore Camryn Lyons and junior Sophie Naivar also drove in a run for the Terriers. Lyons also made the play of the game in center field when she robbed Mia Bonsignore of a run-scoring hit in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Kylie Doherty was 1-for-4 with a double, scored a run and had a terrific catch of her own in left field.
The first game of Saturday's championship round is scheduled for 12 p.m., with a second game set for 2:30 p.m., if necessary. BU needs just one more win to claim its ninth Patriot League title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU struck first when Naivar's two-out single to right field allowed senior Brooke Deppiesse to score from second.
- The Terriers added two more runs in the top of the third. Doherty began things with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
- After Naivar was hit by a pitch, Lyons singled to right to plate Doherty, with Naivar advancing to third and then scoring on an infield single by Apalit.
- Army led off the bottom of the third with a single and eventually had runners on second and third with two outs, but Ricard escaped the jam to maintain the Terriers' 3-0 advantage.
- The Black Knights nearly broke through in the bottom of the fourth, but Lyons ran down a two-out line drive in right center to complete a web gem and end the Army threat.
- That play began a stretch of eight straight hitters retired by Ricard, with Army leading off the bottom of the seventh with a single and a double to spoil Ricard's shutout bid.
- Freshman Madolyn Coupal made a terrific diving grab in front of the third-base bag for the second out before Deppiesse ended the game by backhanding a grounder to second and beating the runner with her throw to first.
- Ricard ended the day with 913 strikeouts, surpassing the previous record of 910 set by BU Athletic Hall of Famer Audrey West ('96).
- She will need 16 more Ks to surpass Lehigh's Lisa Sweeney as the all-time Patriot League leader in career strikeouts.
- Apalit extended her hiting streak to six games.
- Doherty now leads the Terriers with 12 doubles and has recorded 36 extra-base hits this season, including a league-leading 24 home runs.
- This is the 10th consecutive PL Tournament in which the Terriers have advanced to the championship round.
