Softball Celebrates Senior Day With Run-Rule DH Sweep Over Merrimack

BOSTON – With the help of three homers, the Boston University softball team celebrated the six-member senior class and concluded the regular season with a run-rule doubleheader sweep against Merrimack Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (43-13) finished with a 10-2 advantage in extra-base hits to claim 8-0 (5) and 9-1 (5) victories against the Warriors (12-29) and extend their active win streak to nine games. Senior Megan Coyle, junior Kyomi Apalit and sophomore Kieren McHugh all went yard once and tallied a team-high three RBIs apiece on the day. Coyle, Apalit and junior Livia Christopher touched home plate three times each.
In the circle, senior Kasey Ricard (30-6) totaled 10 strikeouts against two hits allowed for the solo shutout. Classmate Haley Ganino (8-2) pitched four scoreless innings in the second contest with three strikeouts and four hits allowed.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Ricard set the tone for the doubleheader with three strikeouts in the top of the first, senior Brooke Deppiesse led off with a single and scored off junior Sophie Naivar's RBI grounder.
- Junior Kylie Doherty earned a walk and eventually scored with the help of a wild pitch.
- Ricard totaled three more strikeouts in the second, and Apalit led off with a double to set up junior Livia Christopher's RBI single.
- With two outs, Dohert singled through the left side, and Coyle launched a 1-1 pitch to left to extend the lead to 6-0.
- Deppiesse recorded an RBI single in the third, and senior Aimee Metz earned her own in the fourth to put the game in run-rule territory at 8-0.
- After Merrimack drew a two-out walk, Ricard claimed her 10th strikeout for the shutout victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a scoreless first, the Warriors threatened in the second with back-to-back one-out singles and a two-out walk to load the bases, but Ganino earned a strikeout to keep Merrimack off the scoreboard.
- The Terriers grabbed the lead for good in the bottom half wth freshman Irys Kline and Apalit earning back-to-back walks to help set up McHugh's three-run homer to right.
- Deppiesse followed with a triple and run scored on Doherty's double to left for the 4-0 lead.
- Remaining on the attack in the third with two on, Apalit launched a towering 3-2 pitch down the left field line that nailed the top of the pole.
- The Warriors tried to mount a rally in the fourth with a two-out single and double to put two in scoring position, but Ganino earned a fly out to center to maintain the 7-0 lead.
- With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Coyle doubled to left and scored on Ricard's pinch-hit RBI double that led to Lyons' RBI single to center.
- In the top of the fifth, after sophomore Danika Nell started off in relief with a strikeout, Merrimack earned a walk and two-out RBI double to avoid the shutout.
- Nell then sealed the run-rule victory with an infield pop up.
- The top-seeded Terriers will host Army, Colgate and Lafayette in the double-elimination Patriot League tournament on May 7-9.
- BU will open against the Leopards on Thursday (May 7) with a 12 p.m. first pitch with the Black Knights and Raiders meeting at 2:30 p.m.
- The Terriers will be seeking their fourth straight automatic NCAA bid.
