Athletic Training
About Us
The Athletic Training Department, within Boston University Student Health Services, provides healthcare for Boston University varsity student-athletes. Our team of athletic trainers and physicians works collaboratively with other Student Health Services departments to provide comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare focused on promoting the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes.
Athletic Training is one of five clinical departments within Student Health Services, alongside Primary Care, Counseling & Psychiatric Services, Survivor Advocacy, Response & Prevention, and Health Promotion & Prevention. This integrated healthcare model allows our providers to coordinate care across specialties and connect student-athletes with the resources they need throughout their time at Boston University.
Our Services
Athletic trainers provide a wide range of healthcare services for student-athletes, including:
Core Clinical Care
- Evaluation and management of athletic injuries and illnesses
- Injury prevention and risk reduction strategies
- Rehabilitation and return-to-participation planning
- Concussion assessment and management
- Coordination of specialty medical care and referrals
- Collaboration with physicians, mental health providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care
Collaborative Coordination
Athletic trainers collaborate closely with team physicians, mental health clinicians, dietitians, coaches, strength and conditioning staff, student-athlete academic support services, and other university partners to coordinate care that supports each student-athlete's health, safety, academic success, and athletic participation.
Our goal is to provide timely, evidence-informed care that supports the immediate and long-term health of student-athletes.
What to Expect
Athletic trainers are often the first healthcare providers student-athletes see following an injury or illness. Your initial visit typically includes a discussion of your concerns, an evaluation, and development of a care plan.
Depending on your needs, your athletic trainer may provide treatment and rehabilitation, coordinate additional testing or specialty referrals, consult with team physicians or other healthcare providers, and work with you throughout your recovery to support a safe return to academic and athletic participation.
Throughout recovery, athletic trainers continually reassess progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and coordinate care with other healthcare providers and communicate with others involved in the student-athlete's care to support a safe return to academic and athletic participation.
Independent Medical Care
Decisions regarding medical care, participation status, and return-to-participation are made independently by the Athletic Training staff, team physicians, and the Medical Director of Student Health Services & Head Team Physician based on current medical evidence and clinical judgment.
Coaches, strength and conditioning staff, and other athletics personnel are important partners in supporting student-athletes throughout the recovery process. However, medical decisions remain the responsibility of the healthcare team.
