Jennifer Deering, a member of the 2002 National Championship softball team at Cal-Berkeley, enters her third season with the softball team in 2009. Prior to her appointment at BU, Deering served as the head coach at Piedmont High School, in Piedmont, Calif. Deering has already made an impact on the program, where she has worked primarily with the pitching staff. In her first season, then-freshman Megan Currier shouldered a challenging workload, following multiple injuries to the rotation. Under Deering[apos]s tutelage, Currier went on to earn a league-leading 18-6 record and culminating with the honor of America East[apos]s Pitcher of the Year. In her first season at Piedmont, Deering led the 2006 softball team to its first Bay Side Athletic League championship in thirteen years. The team also earned its first-ever North Coast Sectional first-place seeding. Deering was named the [quote]East Bay Coach of the Year[quote] by the Oakland Tribune after the team went 19-4 in her tenure. In addition to her responsibilities as the head coach at Piedmont, Deering founded the U-18 Gold Division, an elite summer travel team, from 2005-06. Prior to her appointment at Piedmont, Deering was an assistant softball coach at St. Mary[apos]s College in Moraga, Calif. While at St. Mary[apos]s, Deering was responsible for evaluating talent and recruiting athletes, as well as scouting opponents and coordinating the condition and training of its athletes. A former pitcher at Cal-Berkeley, Deering was a member of the 2002 NCAA national championship team that defeated Arizona 6-0. In four years, Deering compiled a 53-5 record in 78 appearances. A multi-sport athlete at Berkeley, Deering was also a member of the Cal-Berkeley women[apos]s basketball team during the 2000-01 season, playing in 15 games as a freshman. Deering[apos]s responsibilities as an assistant will include working with the pitching staff and spearheading BU[apos]s recruiting efforts.
