Now in her 13th year as the head coach of Boston University women's rowing, she has led her team to a ranking within the top 20 each year.
The varsity has received an NCAA bid six of the 13 years the championship regatta has been in existence. Throughout her competitive and coaching careers, Hatton has been committed to excellence. It is her goal to lead the Terriers to a national championship title.
Hatton returned to Boston University in the fall of 1995 after a 13-year stint at Harvard University. She began her coaching career at BU as the novice coach in 1980. In her three years with the Terrier novices, her crews won two Eastern Sprints and one national championship. At Harvard, she established a remarkable record as the novice coach, as her crews held many national and Eastern Sprints titles. In 1995, she was honored by the EAWRC League as the-Novice Coach of the Year. The CRCA voted her NE Regional Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2006.
Hatton has also coached on five national and two Olympic teams. Her crews won silver medals at the 1990 and 1991 Worlds and a bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games. She began her rowing career in 1973 as a coxswain at Vesper Boat Club. She coxed on national teams from 1977 to 1979, winning a silver medal in the four and a bronze medal in the eight. Holly also coxed the eight for the 1980 Olympic team. In 1981, she coxed the U.S. to a gold medal at the Henley Royal Regatta in England, the first year women raced at the prestigious event. For the past 24 years, members of the 1980 team have reunited to race at the Head of the Charles. At the 2002 regatta, Hatton coxed her crew to a gold medal in the Master's Eight event.
During the summer of 2002, she had the privilege of being the head coach of the Pre-Elite Team. The team of coaches led three crews to the Under-23 World Championships in Genoa, Italy. The pair won a silver medal, the double earned a bronze and the coxless four placed fourth.
In 1992, Hatton was honored by the National Association of College Athletic Directors as a coach of an Olympic medal-winning crew. She was inducted in the Rowing Hall of Fame in 1991 and selected the 1990 Woman of the Year by the USRowing Board of Directors.
Hatton graduated from Moore College of Art with a BFA in Graphic Design. In 2001, she was honored by Moore as a Distinguished Alumna. Moore, the oldest women's art college in the country, is located in Philadelphia, Pa.
