Matt Hanig recently completed his 11th season with the Boston University women's rowing team in 2022-23. Hanig was named assistant coach of the women's rowing program in July, 2012 and also serves as the teams recruiting coordinator. In March of 2023, he was elevated to associate head coach.

The 2022-23 program saw Hanig guide BU to a first-place finish for the Varsity 4 at the Patriot League Championship, marking the Terriers' first gold medal since becoming a league member ahead of 2013-14. As a team, BU was the runner-up after tying for first place in total points.

BU captured its second-ever Patriot League championship in the 2021-22 under Hanig's guidance. In the 2022 NCAA Championships, the Terriers finished 19th with 23 team points, a six-point improvement from their prior appearance in the event in 2014.

During the 2020-21 season, Hanig's ninth at BU, he helped coach the Terriers' varsity eight boat to an excellent 8-3 duel race record during the spring, defeating crews from BC (3x), UMass (2x), URI, Dartmouth and Holy Cross. At the PL Championship Regatta, the Terriers advanced all of their boats to the grand finals, earned a bronze medal in both the varsity eight race and second varsity eight competition and finished in third pace overall.

During the 2019-20 fall season, Hanig's eighth at BU, Hanig helped coach the Terriers to three top-20 finishes at the 2019 Head of the Charles Regatta competing against a large and deep field of the fastest boats in the country. 

During the 2018-19 season, Hanig's' seventh at BU, the Terriers advanced all of its boats to the grand finals at the Patriot League Championships, earned a bronze medal in the varsity eight race and finished in third pace overall, defeating crews from Georgetown, Lehigh, MIT, Colgate, Holy Cross and Loyola.

During the 2018 spring season, Hanig's sixth at BU, the Terriers advanced all of its boats to the grand finals at the Patriot League Championships, earned two silver medals and finished as runner-up to Navy. BU finished ahead of PL crews from Bucknell, Georgetown, Lehigh, MIT, Colgate, Holy Cross and Loyola. 

At the 2018 Eastern Sprints, the Terriers varsity eight boat advanced to the grand finals and finished sixth overall. The V8 defeated Tennessee, Temple, Drexel, BC, MIT, UConn and Holy Cross and was named Patriot League Varsity Eight Boat of the Week.

During the 2016-17 season, his fifth at BU, Matt helped coach the Terriers to a second-place finish at the Patriot League Championships where the BU varsity eight boat won gold and was named Patriot League Boat of the Year. Other season highlights included the BU V8 advancing to the grand finals at the Eastern Sprints and finishing fifth. Earlier in the spring season, the BU V8 defeated crews from Bucknell and Holy Cross on the Charles River and was named Patriot League Boat of the Week.

During the 2015-16 season, his fourth with BU, Hanig helped coach the Terriers to a runner-up finish at the Patriot League Championship where BU won gold in the varsity eight race and finished second to PL Champion Navy by just one point.

In 2014-15, the Terriers won two bronze medals at the Patriot League Championship and finished fourth as a team. Earlier in the season, the BU finished in 7th place at the Eastern Sprints with 61 team points in the field of 12, ahead of Georgetown, Holy Cross, West Virginia, Rutgers, MIT and Buffalo.

During the 2013-14 season, Hanig helped lead the Terriers to the Patriot League Championship in their first season competing in the PL, and a second-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. Other season highlights included a fifth-place team finish at EAWRC Sprints Championships and duel season victories over URI, Buffalo, Rutgers and Bucknell.

In just his 2nd season with BU, Matt helped coach the Terriers to their first CAA Championship, earning an automatic team bid to the 2013 NCAA Championships for the first time since 2001.

Prior to joining BU, Hanig served as sculling coach at Community Rowing in Brighton Mass. since 2009 and was varsity girls head coach and program coordinator at Wayland-Weston Rowing Association from 2008 to 2011. Prior to that, Hanig served as men's assistant rowing coach at Colgate University from 2006 to 2008 where he assisted in all aspects the Raiders' program including recruiting and implementing training programs for the freshman men's team.

Matt was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York, and is a graduate of UMass Amherst.

He and his wife Cara live west of the city with their son Jonah.
