Tom Varnum enters his second year with the Boston University women's golf team in 2008-09. Varnum joined the BU athletics program with a proven record of success, having coached the Tyngsborough men's golf team to three league championships prior to his appointment at BU.
Last year, Varnum inherited a Terrier squad that had captured the America East title in each of the two seasons prior. In his inaugural season with BU, Varnum led BU to a win at the Jack Leaman Championship.
Prior to his appointment at BU, Tyngsborough was a strong program during his seven years at the helm, earning a spot in the state sectional tournament six times while also capturing the trio of league titles. Varnum has performed double duty with his coaching responsibilities, also leading the Lowell Catholic High School women's varsity basketball team for the past four seasons. In addition to his coaching duties at Tyngsborough, Varnum has taught English and journalism for the past 13 years at the high school.
Varnum was named the Lowell Sun Coach of the Year for golf in 2004 and the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Boys Coach of the Year for Division IV North in 2000.
Before his time at Tyngsborough, Varnum was a residence hall director at Providence College, Drexel University and Fordham University. During his stay at Fordham, Varnum earned his master's degree in English literature.
Varnum was a 1989 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a double major in English and communications. He and his wife, LeeAnn, reside in Dracut with their son, Harris.
