Larry Venis, who began his athletic training career after receiving his bachelor's degree in physical education with a concentration in sports medicine, joined the Boston University staff in 1994. A native of South Boston, his initial positions were with Parkway Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Inc. and at Dedham High School, where he served as head athletic trainer. He remained at Dedham for the 1986-87 school year, and then moved to Framingham State College where he worked for a year. Venis returned to his alma mater in 1988 and continued there until 1994 when he was named to the Boston University staff.
He has had considerable experience working in hockey, having served as the medical coordinator and athletic trainer for the New England Pro-Am Hockey League form 1986-92, as the medical liaison for the 1990 World Select 16 Hockey Tournament and as the athletic trainer for the USA Hockey Player Development Program in 1988.
Venis' other athletic training positions have been with the Boston Marathon from 1986-present, the NCAA's National Youth Sports Program from 1987-94 and the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid during the summer of 1996.
Venis received his bachelor's degree from Bostron University in 1986 and completed a master's degree in 1998.
Venis and his wife, the former Ellen Norton from Dorchester, Mass., live in Dorchester with their daughter, Jessica Rose and twins, Nathanial and Abigail.
