July 24, 2018 | General, Women's Lightweight Rowing
For the 11th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 4 is the women's lightweight rowing team's outstanding spring season, as the Terriers defeated national champion Stanford on the Charles River and later earned the No. 1 national ranking by USRowing.
The Terriers entered the 2018 spring season ranked No. 2 in the country in the USRowing Collegiate Coaches poll. In their second race of the season, the Terriers took on No. 1 ranked and defending IRA National Champion Stanford in a duel race on a cold and windy Charles River. The Terriers' 1V, coxed by freshman Katie Barnett and stroked by sophomore Riona McCormick, fell behind early but came from behind in dramatic fashion to win a close race with a time of 7:22.03, just ahead of Stanford's time of 7:23.64.
Despite the victory, BU remained ranked No. 2 and maintained that high ranking with several big performances during their spring season. At the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J., the Terriers' V8 boat won gold in the lightweight competition and bronze in the openweight competition. The following week, the Terriers defeated local rivals Harvard and MIT on the Charles River to win their third-consecutive Lightweight Beanpot Trophy.
Competing at the prestigious Eastern Sprints, the varsity eight boat defeated crews from Princeton, Wisconsin, Georgetown and Harvard to win gold in the grand final. The following week, on May 9 the BU lightweight varsity eight boat was ranked No. 1 in the USRowing Collegiate Coaches poll for the first time in program history.
In their final race before competing at the IRA National Championship Regatta, the No. 1 ranked Terriers won gold at the Dad Vail Regatta, competing against a large field of 18 openweight crews.
On day one of the IRAs, BU successfully advanced two of its three boats to Sunday's grand final races.
In Sunday's varsity eight grand final, the varsity eight boat took on Stanford, Princeton, Wisconsin, Georgetown and MIT under increasingly windy conditions on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
In the grand final, old foe Stanford got out to an early lead ahead of BU with Princeton in third place. BU tried to make a move on the Cardinal with 500 meters to go but Stanford answered and won the championship by a length with a time of 6:40.82. BU won silver with a time of 6:42.79, defeating crews from Princeton (6:43.27) and Georgetown (6:44.34).
The Terriers finished the IRA regatta as national runner-up. 2018 marked the third-consecutive year the Terriers' V8 finished as national runner-up to Stanford at the IRAs.
With their impressive performance in the BU V8 boat, juniors Janice Hagerman and Kamila Vasquez earned Lightweight All-America honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
