John Bredice was an All-State quarterback at Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, when he was recruited by head coach Steve Sinko from Boston University. As fate would have it, the Terriers already had talent at the quarterback position in Tommy Gastall, and now needed receivers.
So, Bredice was moved to end and during his three varsity seasons, he went on to become one of the top receivers in the history of the school. As a sophomore, John made only three receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown. However, as a junior he blossomed, catching 20 for 339 yards and five touchdowns as the Terriers posted a 7-2 record with what most observers ranked one of the top three teams in Boston University history.
The following season, as a senior, John made 35 catches in eight games for 468 yards and four scores to finish second behind Harold Burnine of Missouri, who caught 44 in 10 games, as the nation's leading major college receiver.
His performance earned him a selection on the East squad for the East-West Shrine game that was played in San Francisco and in that game he caught six passes, including a 35-yard touchdown grab in the closing seconds to give the East an upset victory.
His three-year totals at Boston University included 58 receptions for 887 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Following the Shrine game, John was a ninth round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles and was one of five Terriers who signed pro contracts that year. He went on to play five seasons in the NFL as an Eagle and proved to be a favorite of the Philadelphia fans.
