Sunday Session Quotes
May 30, 1999 | Women's Rowing
Jan Harville - Head Coach, University of Washington "That was a barn-burner of a race. We would have liked to be on the front end of it. Unfortunately, we were not.
"You set high goals and standards and obviously, you want to win. I'm really happy that the Four won. I think that was a real dynamic and positive send-off for the team for next year. That's five freshmen who had a really excellent, excellent race.
"The J.V.'s and the varsity did not have their best races. That's unfortunate because you want to end the season with your best performance. We'll take the results and go from there. I've been saying all along that the field has been closing up on us and you cannot afford to be a little bit off on race day.
"To finish third as a team, that might not be our goals, but with the level of competition of women's rowing right now, relatively speaking, it is pretty good. Well' just look to step it up for next year."
Bebe Bryans - Head Coach, Michigan State "I think our performance was excellent for a first-year program. Almost none of these women had rowed prior to coming to college. Coming into a competition of this magnitude, and rowing as well as they did, was outstanding."
George Jenkins - Head Coach, Southern California "I think we had a much better performance today. We were a little concerned with our effort in the semifinal, but I think we bounced back, but not quite far enough. All in all, it's been a good year, and we'll try to come back and do better next year."
Holly Hatton - Head Coach, Boston University "We certainly didn't come in as one of the top ranked crews, and I'm particularly pleased with how our varsity four won the petite final and with our varsity eight performance in the petite. Our goal was to be in the top 12 and we certainly broke into that."
Liz O'Leary - Head Coach, Harvard University "I thought it was a really strong performance overall. We come out here to race against the best crews in the country, and to consider yourself part of that group is rewarding. To be here and have two of three boats in the finals-you can't complain about that."
John Murphy - Head Coach, Brown University "It was just a fantastic race. The kids gave it everything they had. Obviously, these were all tough races, but I'm real proud of how these kids responded. This was a fantastic event and I'm just real happy with the way things turned out."
Kevin Sauer - Head Coach, University of Virginia "I'm very proud of the crews. To finish first or second in all three races is certainly an accomplishment. To tie for the championship is awesome. It is beyond our expectations. We thought we had a chance to finish third, but to tie for first is awesome."
Mary Browning - Head Coach, University of Wisconsin "It didn't turn out the way we were hoping in the varsity eight, but we were really pleased with our effort in the varsity four. We are really happy to be one of the top 10 teams in the country and we had a great season."
Lori Dauphiny - Head Coach, Princeton University "We tried to push early on thinking that was the way to do it. I don't think we could've done anything differently. We were in the lead for the first 800 meters and that was really exciting but it looked like we were inched out for that third position by Cal."
On finishing fourth - "I'm pumped with it right now. We're striving for better but I'm pumped about the fourth-place finish."
Joe Wilhelm - Head Coach, Northeastern University "We were typically slow off the line but really strong through the middle. I thought we did a much better job of rowing within ourselves today. They feel like they finished off the year on a high note which is always nice. We have a few seniors in the boat and it's good for them to have nice memories of a good race as their last race."
Christopher Schmidt - Head Coach, Dartmouth University "It was awful tough competition, but we were pleased (with our effort). We were probably one of the bubble teams to get an invitation to come here with a first eight so we're please to have finished 11th. We beat a few crews along the way that we didn't beat in the finals, but that has a lot to with who comes up with a big race on any given day. I like to see the Ivy League upholding their end and I hope we can continue to do that without scholarships."
Dave O'Neill - Head Coach, University of California "When we started off in September, we never thought we'd be this close to a national championship - even making the final was a huge step. We finally beat our West Coast rival, the University of Washington, which has been, I guess, a thorn in our side. No Cal women's crew, varsity, second varsity or four, has beaten them since 1990, so it's good to get that monkey off our back."
Mark Rothstein - Head Coach, University of Michigan "I was really proud of the [first] varsity eight to rebound today and win the Petite [Final], and the race of the day for Michigan was the Second Varsity Eight, beating Washington, the defending National Champions. It was by far the best race that boat has had this year, and by far the best performance of the second varsity eight in the history of Michigan [Rowing]."
