January 20, 2001 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Terrier men's swimming and diving team won 15-of-16 events en route to an impressive 196-68 victory over the University of Vermont on Sunday (January 20th). With the win, the Terriers improved their season record to 4-1.
While the entire team performed very well, there were two noteworthy performers. Senior Jeff Graves (Rockwell, TX) won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.91, an event in which he normally does not participate. He was also part of the winning 200-meter relay team that included sophomores Jay Toutant (Madison, WI) and Ryo Takano (Ardsley, NY) and freshman Pablo Morales (San Juan, PR). Their time was 1:41.57.
Junior Doug Mark (College Point, NY) was the other outstanding performer, as he won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:19.11. It marked the first time in his collegiate career that he swam the event. Normally a freestyle distance swimmer, Mark also won the 1000 freestyle in 10:23.27.
Other performances of note included senior David Rosado (Madrid, Spain) winning both the 100 and 200 freestyle. His time in the 100 was :49.58, while he was clocked in 1:50.17 in the 200. Another two-event winner was freshman Chris Collins (Phoenix, AZ), who took the 100 backstroke in :57.35) and the 200 in 2:05.06.
Individual winners included senior Mark Halko (Corvallis, OR) in the 200 fly (2:06.09), Morales in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.90), Toutant in the 50 freestyle (:22.76), junior Norman Harrower (Arlington, VA) in the 100 fly (:55.54), and freshman Victor Paquia (Lake Forest, IL) in the three-meter dive (287 points). "Anytime you can win 15 of 16 events, you know that your team has done an excellent job," said Terrier head coach Reagh Wetmore. "This was also an excellent meet for us since many of our swimmers qualified for the America East championships in events in which they don't normally participate. This will help give us depth in all the events at the championships."
