The Terrier men's swimming and diving team put on an impressive three-day performance en route to winning the 2002 America East Championship that was hosted by the University of Maine this past weekend (February 15-17).
In winning their first team title since 1994, the Terriers captured 11 of the 40 events and finished with 733 points to far outdistance the other five teams in the meet. In fact, their closest rival was Binghamton University with 613 points. Next, in order, came Stony Brook University (558), University of New Hampshire (534), University of Maine (509), and University of Vermont (299).
The Terriers were led by senior distance swimmer David Rosado (Madrid, Spain) and freshman diver Victor Paguia (Lake Forest, IL), who were named the meet's Outstanding Swimmer and Diver, respectively.
Rosado captured three individual events-the 200, 500, and 1650, and anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays, as he figured in 80 of the Terriers' points. In the meantime, Paguia won both the one- and three-meter dives and accounted for 40 points.
Rosado's winning times were 1:41.40 in the 200, 4:38.68 in the 500, and 16:22.26 in the 1650, while Paguia scored 317.70 points in the one-meter dive and came back with 514.60 in the three-meter event.
Freshman Chris Collins (Phoenix, AZ) was another triple winner as he swam the 200 IM in 1:55.71, the 100 back in :53.37, and the 200 back in 1:55.76. Sophomore Jay Toutant (Madison, WI) was a close second to Collins in both the 100 and 200 back, as he was clocked in :53.45 in the former and 1:56.80 in the latter. He also took a third in the 50 free in :22.05.
Senior captain Jeff Graves (Rockwell, TX) capped off his collegiate career with personal bests in both the 100 and 200 fly. He won the 100 fly in :51.49 and was second in the 200 in 1:53.39
The men continued their run on first places by winning the 800 free relay with freshman Dave Brown (Fallbrook, CA), junior Doug Mark (College Point, NY), Graves, and Rosado. The four were timed in 6:56.74. The Terriers closed the meet with a decisive win in the 400 free relay at 3:08.53 with Brown, Graves, Toutant, and Rosado.
"The meet was not won just by the first-place winners," said Terrier head coach Reagh Wetmore, who was voted the Conference's Men's Swimming Coach of the Year.
Coaching honors also went to the Terriers' Agnes Miller, who was voted the Diving Coach of the Year.
"This championship has to be recognized for the complete all out effort by every single member of the team," continued Wetmore. "In many cases, they lowered their times substantially and scored valuable points."
