2000 team
The Terrier men's swimming team closed one of its most successful regular seasons in program history with one of the most exciting meets it has ever had a 146-145 decision over host University of Rhode Island.
With the victory, the men finished the season with a 6-1 record. Still on the schedule are two conference championships-America East from February 16-18 at the University of Maine and the ECAC’s from February 22-24 in Sewell, NJ.
The win over Rhode Island showed true grit on the part of the men as they came back from a 20-point deficit to eke out the win on the final leg of the final relay - the 400 freestyle.
After nine events, the Terriers were trailing by a 93-73 margin. Thus, over the final seven events, they outscored the Rams, 73-52.
"Our backs were really against the wall," said Terrier head coach Reagh Wetmore. "We have never been down by as many points and managed to come back to win a meet."
Below are the coach’s words in describing the meet.
The score is the result of a very close contest all the way through the meet. B.U. swimmers won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.43, only four-tenths of a second ahead of URI. Swimming in the relay for the Terriers were Jay Toutant (Madison, WI), Jason Walkow (Erie, PA), Jeff Graves (Rockwell, TX), and Jason Ellow (Bath, PA).
After B.U. lost the next two events, Toutant won the 100 backstroke (:59.40), and Walkow placed first in the 100 breaststroke ((1:01.38) with Jeremy Lisnoff (Narragansett, RI) placing second (1:03.98) which brought the score to B.U., 47-46.
URI’s Sam Peck won the 200 fly by .42 seconds below Graves’ best time this year (1:56.47). URI now had increased their lead to 75-58. B.U.’s Greg Voloshin (Warwick, NY) won the one-meter diving (270.08 points), but URI came back with first- and second-places in the 100 freestyle which increased their lead to 93-73.
In spite of a deficit of 20 points, Toutant won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.62. Walkow and Lisnoff once again won first- and second-places in the 200 breaststroke, which brought the score to URI, 107, B.U., 97. David Rosado (Madrid, Spain), with a time of 4:42.81, was edged by URI’s Peck in the 500 freestyle by five-tenths of a second.
Voloshin won the three-meter diving with a score of 280 points. Graves avenged his loss by winning the 100 fly in :52.25. URI now held a lead of 15 points. However, Ellow, Walkow, and Mark Halko (Corvallis, OR) placed first, third, and fifth in the 200 individual medley, which lowered URI‘s lead to seven points.
- In the 400 freestyle relay, the final event, Dave Rosado, Doug Mark (College Point, NY) and Jeff Graves swam neck-and-neck with their rivals until B.U.’s anchorman, Jay Toutant, pulled slightly ahead on the last lap for a sensational win in 3:14.01, thereby winning the relay by .17 seconds and the meet by 146-145.
