The men’s swimming team closed out one of its most successful seasons ever by winning eight events and finishing fourth overall at the America East Swimming and Diving Championships, February 16-18 at the University of Maine.
The Terriers finished with 495 points. Drexel won the team title with 809 points, followed by Towson, 621; Delaware, 589; BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 495; New Hampshire, 407; Maine, 289; and Vermont, 171.
“Our performances at the conference meet capped off a great season for the team,” said head coach Reagh Wetmore. “We had a 6-1 regular-season record, which was one of the best records we have ever had. Then, we swam exceptionally well at the conference meet.
“At the beginning of the season, I thought we might have a good year, but I didn’t think we would be as successful as we were,” Wetmore went on.
“It was a combination of the upperclassmen swimming well and the freshmen playing a major role,” said the coach.
Among the upperclassmen, senior Jason Walkow (Erie, PA) had “a sensational year,” according to Wetmore, while senior Jason Ellow (Bath, PA) “swam very well for us, especially the IM and freestyle,”
At the Conference championships, Walkow won the 100 breaststroke in :58.48 and was second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.70.
In the meantime, Ellow won the 200 IM in 1:57.01, while he was third in the 200 free in 1:43.40 and fourth in the 100 free in :47.80.
The two also combined to swim two of the four legs of the winning 200 medley relay. They teamed with freshman Jay Toutant (Madison, WI) and junior Jeff Graves (Rockwell, TX) to win the event in 1:35.56.
Ellow and Graves then joined with sophomore Doug Mark (College Point, NY) and junior David Rosado (Madrid, Spain) to win the 800 freestyle in 6:57.66.
The Terriers closed out the meet by winning their third relay—the 400 freestyle in 3:08.93, as Ellow, Graves, Toutant, and Rosado joined forces.
In addition to their three first-place finishes in the relays, the Terriers also finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
Rosado was the Terriers’ top point producer at the America East meet, and tied for the top scorer overall, as he won the 500 freestyle (4:37.60), was second in the 200 free (1:42.83), and was third in the 1650 free (16:27.85), to go along with his points on the relays.
In addition to his performances with the relays, Graves won both the 100 and 200 fly. His time in the 100 was :51.30 to establish a new team record, while he was clocked in 1:53.79 in the 200.
Toutant also swam two individual events—the 100 and 200 backstroke. He was third in the 100 (:53.55) and fourth in the 200 (1:56.70).
Finally, senior diver Greg Voloshin (Warwick, NY) was fifth in the one-meter and fourth in the three-meter dive.
