The Terrier women's crew came up just short in its bid to overcome visiting Iowa on Saturday (April 7th) and lost by 1.4 seconds on The Charles River. The Lady Hawkeyes were timed in 6:36.2, while the Terriers finished in 6:36.2 in a four-team regatta that included third-place Navy in 6:47.7 and fourth-place George Washington in 6:49.3 This marked the second straight week in which the Terriers lost their varsity heavyweight race by less than two seconds. Last week, in the season opener, Syracuse eked out a 1.4-second win over B.U.
However, unlike last week when head coach Holly Hatton was not disappointed with her team's performance, the Terrier head coach was not pleased with how her team rowed against Iowa.
"I was not very happy with how we rowed today," said Hatton. "We just never got in a rowing groove. We weren't fluid out there.
"I realize this is still early in the season," she went on. "Hopefully, we can build on this."
Rowing with a tailwind over calm water, the Terriers led off the start and opened its margin to half a length. However, B.U., which is now 4-2 on the season, never managed to make a significant move to increase its lead. In the meantime, Iowa stayed with the Terriers through the first 1500 meters.
At that point, the Lady Hawkeyes made their move and opened a six-seat lead. The Terriers tried to counter the move, but it was not enough.
"They made their move, and we just didn't respond," said Hatton. "When we finally made our move, it was too late." Hatton's optimism prior to the race can be attributed to comparative scores.
Two weeks ago, Iowa rowed against Texas and beat the Lady Longhorns by three seconds. In the meantime, last week, rowing against Texas and Duke, along with Syracuse, the Terriers defeated Texas by eight seconds.
"Carie Graves told me that Iowa had a good boat," Hatton said of her conversation with Graves, who had coached at Northeastern from 1988-98 prior to her being named the Texas coach in July of 1998.
In the second varsity race on Saturday, Navy came out on top with a time of 6:50, one second ahead of the Terriers, who were timed in 6:51. George Washington was third in 7:11.2.
The Terriers remained undefeated this year in the first novice event, as they finished in 6:59.9. George Washington was second in 7:12, and Navy was third in 7:19.5.
Iowa did not have a boat in either the second varsity or first novice race.
