WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University men's tennis season got underway on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8 with a round-robin tournament at Assumption College. The exhibition also included the University of Vermont and the University of New Hampshire.
The Terriers got the season off to a good start, winning five out of eight singles positions on Saturday. Three of the five singles winners, senior Jason Vinoles, senior Jon Mofsky, and junior Geoff Wagner, were starters on last year's team. The other two wins came from sophomores Manuel Bulawtan and Chris Kubbacki, who saw little playing time last season but are looking to climb their way into the starting lineup.
The doubles teams, which have not been the strong point for B. U. in the past, accumulated two wins from the first and second positions on Saturday.
"We are going to be working a lot this season with doubles," head coach Jeremy Taylor said, who is entering his third year at B. U. "We will try to find the right combinations early in the season so the teams can be comfortable playing together as soon as possible."
On Sunday, minor injuries forced junior Adam Seigel and senior Jon Mofsky to retire from their singles matches. The rest of the matches were played and BU came away victorious in three out of the six matches.
The Terriers didn't fare as well in doubles on Sunday, losing both the second and third doubles positions.
"I really just wanted to get them playing competitively as soon as possible," Taylor said. "Last year, we didn't get into a rhythm until the middle of the season. This year I wanted to get all the cobwebs out and have them ready to go out of the gate."
The freshmen have yet to be tested, as they did not make the trip to Assumption College. The four freshmen will look for playing time as the Terriers head to Boston College for the Boston College Invitational on Friday, September 13-15 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
