Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play In Northeast Tournament

September 23, 2002

PROVIDENCE, R. I. - The Boston University men's tennis team concluded play in the Northeast Tournament, hosted by Brown University, on Sept. 22. The Terriers dropped each of the opening round matches, but fared better in the consolation round.

Junior Geoff Wagner (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), playing in Flight A2 singles, lost a tough match to Brown's Luke Tedaldi, 7-6 (4), 6-7, 6-4. He defeated Rhode Island's Dustin Parente, in another hard-fought match, before falling to Dartmouth's Jesse Paer, 7-5, 6-3, in the consolation semifinal.

In A3 singles, senior Noel Moossa (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) also dropped out in the consolation semifinals. After winning the first set, Moossa was blanked in the final two sets, falling to Boston College's Ross Pytko, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Senior Jason Vinoles (Port Washington, N. Y.) fell to Assumption's Jason Spiers 6-3, 6-3, and Harvard's Yusuf Randera-Roos, 6-4, 7-5. In the 13th-place bracket, Vinoles got by Iona's Kevin O'Rourke, 6-3, 6-2, before settling for 14th place with a loss to Montreal's Raphael Schiaparelli by default.

Senior J. P. Debbink (Oconomowoc, Wisc.), sophomore Manuel Bulauiton (Manhosset, N. Y.), and freshman Nick Ganias (Worcester, Mass.) each finished in 10th place in their respective flights.

"My players were up to the challenge," said head coach Jeremy Taylor. "They went up against some tough schools like Harvard and Brown and made them really have to play."

In doubles action, Wagner and Moossa paired in Flight D1 and nearly ran the table after falling into the consolation bracket. After losing to Dartmouth's D1 team, they defeated Montreal and St. John's by default before Harvard won the consolation final, 8-1.

The flight D2 team of Vinoles and Debbink finished 13th, while Bulauiton and sophomore Krzysztof Kubacki (Warsaw, Poland) finished 14th in D3. The pair of Ganias and senior Julian Delacruz (New York, N. Y.) finished 2nd in a field of eight in flight D4.

"Everyone has picked up their level of play from three weeks ago," concluded Taylor. "That's what the fall season is all about, playing matches and getting back into form physically and mentally."

The Terriers next play in the Connecticut Invitational in Storrs, Conn. from Sept. 27-29.
