The Terrier men's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2003 Bob Mowerson Memorial Swim Meet that was held on Wednesday (January 8th) at the College Forum in Fort Lauderdale, FL
The highlight of the meet was turned in by sophomore Victor Paquia (Lake Forest, IL), who took first place in the combined one- and three-meter dives at the Bin Stults Diving Meet, which was run in conjunction with the Mowerson Meet. Paquia scored 289.50 points in the event that attracted 15 divers. Sophomore Brian Martinez (Chelmsford) finished fourth with 227.75 points.
In the swim portion of the meet, the Terriers garnered the majority of their points in the 50-meter freestyle as they took four of the top places for 58 points. Freshman Mike Kelly (Shrewsbury, CT), junior Jay Toutant (Madison, WI), junior Ryo Takano (Elmsfor, NY), and Aaron LeValley (Elma, NY), finished third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
Unlike a traditional meet, a team can enter as many competitors as it wants in an event. In addition, unlike the regular-season meets, all races were in meters rather than yards.
The Terriers also fared well in the other three events that were held-the butterfly, the backstroke, and the breaststroke.
In the fly, Brent Bernskrant (Hollywood, FL) finished seventh and was followed in order by senior Scott Harrower (Arlington, VA) and junior Justin Reid (Cape Elizabeth, ME), who were eighth and 10th, respectively.
In the backstroke, sophomore Chris Collins (Phoenix, AZ) was fourth while freshman Sean Galvin (Edina, MN) was fifth. Finally, freshman Ryan Falk (Sarasota, FL) was fourth in the breaststroke.
"I thought the men swam very well," said Terrier head coach Reagh Wetmore. "We were in Fort Lauderdale working out twice a day for 10 days, and I was very pleased with how the men continued to improve. Based on how well they did during the workouts and in the meet, I am very optimistic about the second half of our season."
