BOSTON, MA-The B.U. men's swimming and diving team, rallied from a 24-point deficit to actually take a one-point lead but dropped a hard-fought 153-146 decision to Stony Brook on Saturday, Nov. 23.
It marked the third straight loss for the Terriers who staged a valiant effort by winning eight the 16 events, including the final relay.
Through the meet's first four events, the Terriers fell behind, 49-25, as Mike Bear (Arlington, VA) accounted for the lone victory when he swam the 1000 free in 10:15.10.
The Terriers then began their rally by finishing 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke when Griffin Moodie (Edina, MN) won the event in 1:00.20, followed by Ryan Falk (Sarasota, FL) in 1:02.85. The Terriers then finished 2-3 in the 200 fly, 1-2-3 in the one-meter dive, and a first in the 100 free to take a one-point lead, 85-84.
However, Stony Brook countered with a 1-2 in the 200 back to take back the lead, 99-89, and never looked back.
"It was a very exciting meet," said head coach Reagh Wetmore. "I was very happy with how the men came back from trailing after just four events. They kept competing right up until the final event, which they won (the 200 freestyle relay)."
"There were a number of excellent individual performers," the coach went on. "Victor Paguia (Lake Forest, IL) continued to show that he is an outstanding diver, and Mike Kelly (Shrewsbury, NJ) did a terrific job in winning two individual events and swimming the anchor in the final winning relay."
Paguia led the Terrier sweep in both diving events. He had 298.72 points en route to winning the one-meter dive and came back with 278.29 points in the three-meter event. He was followed in each event by sophomore Bryan Martinez (Chelmsford, MA), who scored 259.59 and 230.32 for second, and junior James Yon (Pittsfield, MA), with 199.95 and 216.37 points for third.
Kelly took three firsts and a second, setting personal season-best times in all events. He won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races in :21.85 and :48.16 seconds, respectively, anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with a :21.38 split and put the 200 medley relay in position to finish second as he swam a :21.19 leg.
Sophomore Ryan Falk (Sarasota, FL) was the other Terrier to win an event as he took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18:96 minutes. He also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02:85. The men swim are now off for two weeks as their next meet will be against conference rival University of Maine on Saturday, December 6 at 1:00 PM in Boston.
