Paquia, Kelly, Toutant Lead Terriers At America East Championships

Sophomore Victor Paquia won both the one- and three-meter dives, while Mike Kelly and Jay Toutant won individual swimming events to lead the Terrier men's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at last weekend's (February 14-16) America East Championships hosted by the University of Maine.
The Terriers, who led the meet after the first of three days of competition with 238.5 points, finished runners-up to Binghamton. The Bearcats, who took over the team lead after the second day of competition, finished the competition with 771 points, while the Terriers followed with 678 points. Next, in order, came Stony Brook (644.50), New Hampshire (523), Maine (397.50), and the University of Vermont (189).
Paquia continued his dominance of America East divers as he finished with 313.35 points at one meter and 524.85 points at three meters. For the second straight year, he was named the Men's Outstanding Diver of the Year, while Terrier coach Agnes Miller was named the Men's Outstanding Diving Coach of the Year. She was also named the Women's Outstanding Diver of the Year, as she guided the women's divers to a 1-4 finish in the one-meter event and 2-5-6 in the three-meter competition.
Paquia, who hails from Lake Forest, IL, led the B.U. men to a 1-4-5 finish at both one and three meters as the divers accounted for 118 of the team's 678 points. Of the 118 total, Paquia contributed 40 points for the two first-place finishes. In the one-meter event, he was followed by Dan Brown (Manchester, NH), who was fourth with 223.75 points, and James Yon (Pittsfield, MA), who was fifth with 213.45 points. In the three-meter competition, Brown was fourth again with 353.60 points, while Ryan Martinez (Chelmsford) was fifth with 349.30 points.
While Paquia was taking first in the dives, Toutant (Madison, WI) and Kelly (Shrewsbury, CT) were adding 20 points each in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, respectively.
Toutant led a 1-4 finish for the Terriers, as he was clocked in :53.23, while Chris Collins (Phoenix, AZ) was fourth in 2:01.24. In the meantime, Kelly beat the field in the 100 free with a time of :46.50.
Kelly had an outstanding meet for the Terriers, as he figured in 179.5 of the team's points with both his individual performances in three individual events along with his efforts on four relays. In addition to his first-place finish in the 100 free, he tied for third in the 50 free and was third in the 100 fly. He also swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay, which finished second; on the 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay both of which finished third; and the 400 freestyle relay, which finished fourth.
In the meantime, Toutant was just behind Kelly in point totals for the team, as he added 176 with three individual and four relays. In addition to winning the 100 backstroke, he was second in the 200 backstroke and sixth in the 50 freestyle. He was also on the 200 and 400 freestyle, the 200 and 400 medley relays.
Below are the events in which the Terriers reached the finals and how they fared.
The 200 freestyle relay: The group of Toutant, Kelly, Collins, and Aaron LeValley (Elma, NY) finished second in 1:25.89. Stony Brook won the event in 1:25.53. .
The 500 freestyle: David Brown (Fallbrook, CA) was fourth in 4:48.69. Binghamton's Magnus Lofgren won the event in 4:39.15.
The 200 individual medley: Collins was fourth in 2:00.48. Ryan Falk (Sarasota, FL) was just behind in fifth place with a 2:00.83. Binghamton's Chris McGuire was first in 1:52.63.
The 50 freestyle: Kelly tied for third with New Hampshire's Deron Huff, as each was timed in :21.64. Toutant was sixth in :22.11. New Hampshire's Dan Brittan won the event in :21.44.
The 400 medley relay: The group of Collins, Falk, Kelly, and Toutant were third in 3:33.61. The Binghamton relay won the event in 3:29.92.
The 200 medley relay: The foursome of Toutant, Falk, Scott Harrower (Arlington, VA), and Collins finished fourth in 1:37.62. Again, Binghamton emerged as the winner in a time of 1:36.24.
The 400 individual medley: Doug Mark (College Point, NY) was seventh in 4:22.86. Chris McGuire of Binghamton, who was voted the meet's Outstanding Male Swimmer, was first in 4:09.08
The 100 butterfly: Kelly was third in :51.74. Matt Hanson of Stony Brook won the event in :51.08.
The 200 freestyle: David Brown was fourth in 1:44.68. Magnus Lofgren of Binghamton won the event in 1:43.10.
The 100 breaststroke: Ryan Falk was fourth in 1:00.14. New Hampshire's Steve Tamas bested the field with a time of :57.11.
The 100 backstroke: Toutant won the event with a :53.23, while Collins was fourth in :55.29.
The 800 freestyle relay: The Terriers, which comprised of David Brown, Ryo Takano (Elmsfor, NY), Mark, and Kelly, finished third in 7:06.86. Binghamton won the relay in 6:59.05.
The 1650 freestyle: Mark was fifth in 17:06.00. Binghamton's Lofgren was first again in 16:20.15.
The 200 backstroke: Toutant was second in 1:57.27, while Collins was fourth in 2:01.24. Stony Brook's Nathan French finished just ahead of Toutant in 1:55.19.
The 100 freestyle: Kelly won the event in :46.50.
The 200 breaststroke: Ryan Falk was fourth in 2:11.32. Binghamton's Robert Kaczynski was first in 2:04.84.
The 200 butterfly: Harrower was seventh in 2:00.55. Binghamton's McGuire was first in 1:49.16.
The 400 freestyle relay: The Terriers were fourth in 3:-09.69. Toutant, Collins, David Brown, and Kelly swam for the Terriers. New Hampshire won the event in 3:07.16.
The dives: Again, it was Paquia who led the way in both events. He was joined by Dan Brown and James Yon in the one-meter event, while Brown and Ryan Martinez joined him in the three-meter competition.
