BOSTON - The Boston University men's tennis team lost to the University of Rhode Island in its closest match of the season at the B. U. Track and Tennis Center on Saturday, March 29.
For the first time this spring, singles play preceded the doubles matches do to conflicting schedules in the Track and Tennis Center.
At first singles, junior Geoff Wagner (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) finished off Dan Pariente 6-1, 6-0 to give B. U. a 1-0 lead. Junior Adam Siegel (Sudbury, Mass.) defeated Bill Moran 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Kris Kubacki (Warsaw, Poland), playing in his second collegiate match, came up with a big win at sixth singles, 7-5, 7-5, to create a split in singles, 3-3, and carry the deadlock into doubles play.
Rhode Island jumped out in front early as sophomores Nick Ganias (Worcester, Mass.) and Kubacki, playing at No. 2 doubles lost, 8-1. At No. 1 doubles, Wagner and Siegel won, 8-4, to keep B.U. alive. The match came down to the No. 3 doubles pairing of Debbink and Vinoles, but they weren't able to capitalize, losing 8-4.
The Terriers (3-7, 1-1) look to bounce back from the loss when they take on Boston College on Sunday, March 30 at the B. U. Track and Tennis Center.
