August 21, 2003 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON - Michal Epstein, a 5-foot-10 guard who led Providence College in scoring and assists last season, will transfer to Boston University, Terrier women's basketball head coach Margaret McKeon announced on Thursday, August 21.
Epstein will sit out the 2003-04 season due to NCAA transfer rules, and will have two years of eligibility remaining for the Terriers starting with the 2004-05 season.
"We are very excited for Michal to join our program," said McKeon. "She's a very talented player with great size and versatility. She can shoot the three, penetrate, and has a ton of experience."
In two seasons at Providence, Epstein averaged 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 47 career games played.
As a sophomore in 2002-03, Epstein led the Friars and ranked 14th in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. She reached double-figures in scoring in 20 of 24 games, while scoring 20 or more points on five occasions.
During her freshman campaign, Epstein appeared in 23 games, averaging 8.2 points and 2.3 assists per contest. She tallied a season-high 23 points and had eight rebounds in a regular-season contest against top-ranked and eventual National Champion Connecticut.
A native of Rehovot, Israel, Epstein played for the Israeli National Team during her scholastic career. Joining junior center Amparo Lopez (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore guard Rachael Vanderwal (Stoney Creek, Ontario), Epstein becomes the third international player on the Terrier roster.
"Michal has a great knowledge of the game," said McKeon. "We're looking forward to the opportunity of seeing her compete for our program."
Boston University (16-15, 10-6) made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2002-03 season after capturing its first-ever America East Conference title. The Terriers return four starters and 10 letterwinners for the 2003-04 season.
