HANOVER, N.H. - A 40-save effort by sophomore Karson Gillespie (Mankota, Sask.) and two goals by freshman Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) led the No. 18 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 5-1 victory at Dartmouth College on Saturday night. The win gives the Terriers a 6-7-2 overall record heading into the semester break, with a 4-5-1 Hockey East mark, while the Big Green are now 4-6-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the ECACHL.
A goal in each of the first two periods, followed by three tallies in the final stanza gave BU the 5-0 lead, before the Big Green converted on the power play with just over two minutes remaining in the game to escape from being shut out. The Terriers??? top line of seniors John Laliberte (Saco, Maine) and Brad Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) and freshman Jason Lawrence (Saugus, Mass.) combined for a pair of goals, which brings their total to six goals in the last three games, while Yip ended his nine-game scoring drought with two lamp lighters, including the game-winner.
???Karson Gillespie gave us a hell of a game tonight, especially in the first period,??? said BU Head Coach Jack Parker. ???Between not defending well up front and turning the puck over in the attacking zone when we didn???t have to, we gave them a lot of chances [in the first period] and Karson had to come up big. If we hadn???t gotten great goaltending in the first period, it would have been a completely different game.
???As the game progressed, especially in the third period, we played much better defensively,??? added Parker.
In the first period, the Terriers did two things that have often eluded them this season: score first and convert on the power play. The two occurred simultaneously when the first line joined forces for a goal at 15:21. Zancanaro put home Laliberte???s rebound for his third goal in as many games.
Yip netted the only goal in the second period, which was the eventual game-winner, when he tipped in a rebound off a quality shot by sophomore Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at 8:53.
BU???s trio of third-period goals came within a 5:33 span, first with a wrister by Lawrence at the left post off a feed from Zancanaro at 3:56 for the 3-0 score. Down a man a few minutes later, a give-and-go between sophomore Brian McGuirk (Danvers, Mass.) and Zancanaro resulted in McGuirk scoring BU???s first shorthanded goal of the season at 8:09. With his third point of the outing, Zancanaro improved to seven points in the last three games.
Yip tallied BU???s fifth and final goal with a bullet of a shot from the right faceoff circle from classmate Chris Higgins (Lynnfield, Mass.).
The shutout lasted until late in the last period, when Tanner Glass finally beat Gillespie with a power-play backhander at 17:37.
The Terriers held the Big Green 1-for-7 on the power play, while going 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
BU now begins a 19-day hiatus from game action for the holiday break. The Terriers will take to the ice next at 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 30 versus Merrimack at Agganis Arena.
