Yip Named Hockey East Rookie of the Week

January 16, 2006

BOSTON – After setting up three of eight goals in a weekend sweep of No. 7/9 Maine, Boston University men’s ice hockey freshman forward Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was today named the Hockey East Superskills Hockey Rookie of the Week.

Assisting on both the game-tying and the game-winning goals in the third period of Friday’s 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Black Bears, the rookie followed it up with another helper in Saturday’s 5-4 win for the season and series sweep. The award is the first in Yip’s young career after twice making the Hockey East Honor Roll earlier in the season.

Three other Terriers were also recognized for their outstanding efforts versus Maine last week, as juniors John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) and Kenny Roche (South Boston, Mass.), along with sophomore Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each made their way onto the Honor Roll.

Curry earned the back-to-back league wins over the Black Bears, making a total of 52 saves, including 16 in the first period of Friday’s game. Meanwhile, Roche had three goals and an assist, scoring two of three BU goals, including the game-winner with 1:10 left in the game on Friday, then coming back Saturday to set up the game-winner and net a power-play goal on the nation’s top PK unit. Finally, MacArthur totaled a goal and three assists, including a shorthanded goal and a game-winning assist.

The Terriers return to action this weekend in a home-and-home series with Merrimack, starting on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
