March 21, 2006

BOSTON – After leading the No. 1 Boston University men’s ice hockey team to its first Hockey East Championship since 1997, senior co-captain David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, B.C.) was named the CCM/RBK Player of the Week, as announced by the league on March 20. Freshman Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was named Super Skills Hockey Rookie of the Week for his overtime game-winner in the Hockey East Championship.

Van der Gulik was also named to the All-Tournament team and earned the Pure Hockey/Bill Flynn Tournament MVP award after tallying eight points (6-2) in the tournament. The senior forward scored his third career hat trick, and second of the tournament, on March 17 while leading the Terriers to a 9-2 victory over New Hampshire and a berth to the Hockey East title game. He set a new Hockey East record in the process for the fastest hat trick in a tournament game at 23:21. The Abbostford, B.C. native is the only player in Hockey East history to record two hat tricks in the same tournament. No other player even has two tournament hat tricks in a career.

Yip, who was named Super Skills Hockey Rookie of the Year on March 16 at the Hockey East banquet, had a record-setting performance in the championship game. After tallying an assist in the Terriers’ first quarterfinal game, the freshman forward became the first rookie in tournament history to score a overtime game-winning goal in the championship game.

Senior defenseman Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) was also named to the All-Tournament team for picking up seven points (2-5) in the tournament. Spang had a career high four points (2-2) in BU's semi-final win over New Hampshire.

The Terriers head to Worcester, Mass., as the No. 1 seed, and Northeast Regional host, to face off against fourth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday, March 25. Rounding out the Northeast Regional are No. 2 seed Miami University and No. 3 seed Boston College.
