WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Freshman forward Joe Pereira has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The forward tallied the first points of his career in the Terriers' 6-3 win over Cornell, posting his first collegiate goal and also adding his first assist in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,200 at Madison Square Garden.
After being a healthy scratch for eight straight games, Pereira was inserted into the lineup on Saturday following an injury to junior Jason Lawrence. The West Haven, Conn., native did not disappoint, opening the scoring with his first career goal before assisting on sophomore Luke Popko's goal just 18 seconds later.
The result was an early 2-0 lead for the Terriers, who went on to add another goal less than two minutes later en route to a 3-0 first-period advantage in what ended up being a 6-3 triumph.
Pereira is the second Terrier freshman to be named Hockey East Rookie of the Week this season, as fellow Connecticut native Nick Bonino, who assisted on Pereira's goal, earned the honor three weeks ago.
Pereira and the Terriers will return to action this weekend for a big home-and-home series with archrival Boston College. The series opener will take place at BC's Conte Forum on Friday (Nov. 30) at 7 p.m.
