
Swimming and Diving Completes Day One of AE Championships

BOSTON - After one night of competition, the Boston University women's swimming and diving team sits in third place, while the men are in fifth at the 2007 America East Swimming and Diving Championships, held at BU's Aquatics Center. On day one, the finals were held for the men's one-meter diving, the 200-medley relay and 800-free relay. The women garnered with 65 points, while the men collected 78.
The women's side is just nine points out of first place and seven from second place. UMBC is currently atop the standings with 74 points and UNH is not too far behind with 72. One the men's side, UMBC leads with 100 points through three events.
The 4x800-free relay team of Brigette O'Shaughnessy, Christina Ruggiero, Marina Morie and Eve Kinsella swam to a second-place finish, clocking in at 7:37.27. The team came in second only to UMBC's record-breaking team, which touched in 7:30.14, setting a new meet record.
The records continued to fall in the men's 800-free relay as UMBC swam to a 6:47.72 finish, a new AE championship record. Following closely behind was BU's relay team comprised of three freshmen and a junior. Ben Kaiser led off with Arik Seiler, Kyle Berg and Greg Dierksen picking up 34 points for the Terriers.
The women's 200-medley relay team tied with the University of Maine in a time of 1:48.31 for third place. Freshman Ali Chester swam the opening leg of the race, followed by senior Lidija Breznikar, freshman Emily Munday and senior Marina Morie.
Sophomore Brian Lawler took home third place honors in the one-meter diving event with 289.55 points four points shy of second place.
Closing out the first night of competition was the men's 200-medley relay. Swimming in his second event of the night was leadoff swimmer Arik Seiler. Senior Griffin Moodie was the second BU swimmer off the blocks, followed by senior James Lands and freshman Kyle Berg, also making his second appearance on day one. The team finished fifth in a time of 1:36.33.
Day two of the championships will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 500 free.
