Matt Gilroy, who in four short years went from a walk-on at Boston University to a Hobey-Baker winning co-captain of the 2009 NCAA championship team to a defenseman for the New York Rangers, has been named one of this decade's top sports breakouts by USA TODAY.
Named alongside such athletes as Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez and Phil Mickelson, Gilroy's rapid ascent is also compared to those of mixed martial arts, the Bowl Championship Series, Funny Cide and the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
