Senior co-captain Matt Gilroy was named the most valuable player of the Boston University men's ice hockey team after leading the Terriers to their fifth national title and becoming just the second player in program history to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, honoring the nation's top collegiate hockey player.
Gilroy, who received the Mickey Cochrane Award (top male athlete at BU), became the first defenseman in Hockey East history to be named a First Team All-Star three times. He was named to the All-America First Team for the second consecutive season and joined Rick Meagher and Chris Drury as the only BU players to earn All-America honors three times. He finished the 2008-09 season with 37 points - third most among Division I defensemen - on eight goals and 29 assists.and added a plus-22 rating.
