BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team (7-8, 3-0 AE), which currently owns its longest winning streak of the season with three straight, will reunite with Albany (7-8, 0-2 AE) for the first time since the Terriers ousted the Great Danes in overtime in the America East quarterfinals last year. It will mark the first home game of the New Year for BU, while UA will be looking to snap a two-game losing skid.
THE TERRIERS: BU has been firing on all cylinders recently with three consecutive wins over America East foes - Maine, Binghamton, Stony Brook - while it has averaged 71.3 ppg within that span. Sophomore Alex Young leads of trio of underclassmen at the top of the Terriers' scoring list with 15.3 ppg. Freshman Chantell Alford follows with 14.8 ppg and classmate Caitlynn Moran averages 12.7 ppg. Senior Aly Hinton is also in double figures with 10.4 ppg.
Overall, BU is scoring 67.3 ppg, which is good for second in the league, and the team has dished out the most assists in the conference with 13.5 pg.
LAST TIME OUT (Stony Brook, Jan. 13, 2010): Backed by a 25-point performance from sophomore Alex Young, the Boston University women's basketball team defeated Stony Brook, 75-61, on Wednesday night in Stony Brook, N.Y. Freshman Chantell Alford tallied 22 points and senior Aly Hinton added 12 in the squad's third-straight triumph. With the victory, head coach Kelly Greenberg recorded her 100th win at the helm of the Terriers' program.
Young was 7-for-16 from the field and 4-for-8 from behind the arc to go along with four assists and four steals to earn America East Player of the Game honors. Alford also had a strong showing with nine field goals and three treys. Junior Kerry Cashman recorded a career-high 13 rebounds, which was a season high for the Terriers.
BU capitalized on 23 SBU miscues to score 24 points off turnovers. The Terriers were also aggressive going to the basket, scoring 32 in the paint and 15 from the free-throw line. BU's lead swelled to as much as 24 points late in the second half, and they held on for its second straight double-digit victory.
LAST TIME OUT VS. ALBANY (March 13, 2009): Christine Kinneary drove to the basket for the game-winning layup with three seconds left in overtime as the top-seeded Boston University women's basketball team escaped Chase Arena with a 77-75 victory over No. 8 Albany on March 13, 2009 in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament. Kinneary finished with 17 points, while Jesyka Burks-Wiley recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Kinneary hit the game-winning shot after the Terriers regained possession just before half court and she drove one-on-one against an Albany defender, going in for the right-handed layup. Albany's Britney McGee, who finished with a game-high 32 points, got off the game's last shot with a long three that rimmed out securing BU's quarterfinal victory.
Kristi Dini also reached double figures with 15 points on 5-for-13 shooting. The Terriers made the most of 15 offensive boards as they scored 12 second-chance points and held the Great Danes to just eight. In the end, BU won the battle of the boards, 46-38.
BU VS. ALBANY: The Terriers lead the all-time series, 15-3, including a sweep of the series in 2008-09, which including an epic overtime victory in the AE quarterfinals. Prior to that, BU had won five of the last six. Albany picked up its other two victories of the series on Jan. 29, 2006, and March 2, 2005. The rivalry began on Jan. 18, 2000 with a 68-55 Terrier win and was followed by seven consecutive BU wins. The largest margin of victory in the history of the series came on Jan. 9, 2003 in a Terrier victory, 87-56.
DOUBLE THE FUN: Sophomore Alex Young has turned the heat up this season as she currently averages 15.3 points per game and has reached double figures in 12 consecutive games, which includes back-to-back 20+-point performances. Freshman Chantell Alford is not far behind with 11 straight double-digit showings. Classmate Caitlynn Moran and Alford have reached 20 or more points on four occasions, which is the third most in the league.
CASE CLOSED: The confines of Case Gym have proven to be a formidable home-court advantage for the Terriers throughout the last four seasons as they have won 26-of-28 contests and are 23-2 against non-conference opponents in the last three seasons at Case Gymnasium. In addition, the Terriers have not lost to a conference opponent in 18 straight games, dating back to Feb. 17, 2007.
In 2007-08, BU was 11-0 overall and 8-0 in America East action, and the Terriers' only home loss came at Agganis Arena on Nov. 17, 2007 to then-No. 16 Ohio State. It marked the first time in program history the Terriers went undefeated at Case. Last year, BU went 12-1 at home with its lone home loss coming to St. John's on Dec. 30, 2008.
Six times, BU has lost just one home contest (2008-09, 2007-08, 1994-95, 1986-87, 1979-80, 1977-78).
GREENBERG REACHES 100 WINS AT BU: On Wednesday, Jan. 13, head coach Kelly Greenberg recorded her 100th win as the head coach of Terrier program. She is the second head coach of the program to reach 100 victories and she accomplished the feat in six seasons and 171 games. She is the first since Christine Basile, who coached at BU from 1983 to 1999 and reached the milestone in her seventh season (175 games) on Babcock Street.
