BOSTON - Sophomore Alex Young had the hot hand with a game-high 20 points as the Boston University women's basketball team defeated Maine, 56-59, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. The Terriers improve to 11-10 overall and 7-2 in America East action, while Maine falls to 7-14 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Young, who earned America East Player of the Game honors, was 7-for-15 from the field and knocked down two treys to go along with two assists in the game. She was joined in double-figures by freshman Chantell Alford with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting. Alford also dished out three assists and earned six steals, including two in the final eight minutes that led to four crucial fastbreak points for the Terriers. Senior Aly Hinton chipped in nine points and she is now just 10 points away from the 1,000-point plateau. Sophomore Caroline Stewart brought down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Terriers.
BU shot 40.0 percent from the field and hit four from behind the arc, while holding the Black Bears to 33.3 percent field-goal shooting. BU was aggressive in transition and netted 14 points on the fast break and held Maine to just four points in the same situation. The Terriers also outscored the Black Bears, 28-20, in the paint.
BU enjoyed a 10-point lead, 33-23, at the break as Young and Alford combined to score 23 points. After Maine scored the first bucket of the game, Alford drained a three to take over the lead, one which BU would not relent the rest of the way. The Black Bears drew to within one point twice in the first stanza; however, a 15-3 run over a five-minute span gave the Terriers a 30-17 advantage with two minutes left in the first half. Maine's Katelyn Vanderhoff, who earned the Black Bears' America East Player of the Game honors with a team-high 12 points, went in for a lay-up with three seconds left to round out the first-half scoring.
In the second half, a tough Maine side brought the deficit back into single digits and made it a one-possession game at 11:05 when Vanderhoff completed a traditional three-point play to move the score to 40-37. After a Hinton 3-pointer, the Black Bears continued to chip away at BU's lead as Vanderhoff and Kristin Baker scored four-straight free throws to make it a two-point game, 43-41.
However, a 6-0 spurt pushed the lead back to eight, 51-43, with five minutes remaining and the Terriers staved off any Maine rally as they went on to win by seven, 56-49.
BU will host Binghamton on Wednesday (Feb. 3) at 7 p.m.
