BOSTON - Backed by goals from juniors Brittany Heist and Tiya Gallegos, the Boston University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Maine on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. BU finishes its regular season with a 14-5-0 record and a perfect 8-0-0 mark in America East action.
It is the first perfect conference regular season for the Terriers in two years and its third overall (2000, 2008).
BU, which has now won 30 of its last 31 games against the AE, outshot the Black Bears (7-8-0, 3-5-0 AE), 23-7, and forced Maine's Meagan Price-Leibenzeder to make four saves. Freshman Kelly King and junior Alice Binns combined to make four saves for a program-record 13th shutout. Binns was really tested in the second half as she made an impressive save on a breakaway and was forced to make two more stops before time expired on the clock.
Heist scored the game-winner on a header in the 24th minute of the match. Classmate Jessica Luscinski had sent in a perfect cross from the far side that Heist got a header on at the top of the six-yard box and redirected it into the far left side for her second tally of the season.
In the 65th minute, graduate student Lisa Kevorkian chipped a pass over a Maine defender to Gallegos, who buried it into the back of the net from 11 yards out into the upper left spot. It was Gallegos' seventh of the season.
The Black Bears made one final push as they gave Binns and the defense some trouble late in the second half with a handful of runs. In the 83rd minute, Maine's Nikki Misener had a near breakaway that Binns aggressively came off her line to smother near the top of the 18-yard box. With less than five minutes remaining Maggie Malone and Misener tested Binns two more times before earning a corner kick that Binns punched out of danger.
BU will now have a week off before hosting an AE semifinal match at Nickerson Field on Sunday, Oct. 31.
NOTES: The Terriers have had an impressive season thus far, winning 11 straight contests to break a program record for consecutive wins, and breaking another team record for shutouts (13). BU has also stretched its shutout streak to 1000:02 minutes and 11 straight games, which is the sixth longest streak in NCAA history.
In all BU has outscored its opponents 32-0 during its 11-game winning streak.
