BOSTON - Paced by graduate student Eric Ashe's second-place finish, the Boston University men's cross country team captured its 11th America East Championship on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park. The Terriers, who edged runner-up Binghamton by nine points, claimed their first conference crown since 2000. The women's squad finished fourth.
BU, which has won the most America East men's cross country championships, finished with 45 points and was trailed by Binghamton (54), Albany (60), Maine (118), UMBC (161), Stony Brook (170), Vermont (186), Hartford (192) and New Hampshire (229).
Three Terriers earned all-conference honors for finishing in the top 10, including Ashe, freshman Rich Peters and junior Robert Gibson. Ashe completed the 8K course in 24:22.29, good for second place, while Peters (24:50.11) and Gibson (24:56.83) finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Junior Matthew Paulson recorded a time of 24:58.34, good for an 11th-place finish, while junior Peter Gilmore rounded out BU's top runners and finished in 17th place (25:10.74).
In addition, head coach Bruce Lehane and the men's cross country coaching staff earned coaching staff of the year honors for the 10th time in program history.
On the women's side, junior Katie Matthews, who finished eighth (17:50.68) en route to all-conference honors, paced the Terriers to a fourth-place finish. Senior Kathleen Davies recorded an 11th-place finish (17:58.45) on the 5K course, while sophomore Breeanna Potter secured 18th place with a time of 18:16.61. Junior Madeline Steiner (29th place/18:43.66) and freshman Rosa Moriello (38th place/18:55.44) rounded out BU's top runners.
BU secured 104 points and trailed champion Stony Brook (24), New Hampshire (63) and Maine (97). Albany (109), Vermont (121), Binghamton (183), UMBC (231) and Hartford (277) rounded out the championship's participants.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Nov. 13 for the NCAA Northeast Regional in Madison, Conn.
