HARTFORD, Conn. - The Boston University women's basketball team has been selected to finish second in the America East in the 2011-12 season, following a vote of the league's nine head coaches. The Terriers received two first-place votes and 56 total points in the poll, the conference office announced on Thursday afternoon at the 2011 America East Basketball Tip-Off Event.
Additionally, junior guard and 2011 America East Player of the Year Chantell Alford was a unanimous selection for the AE Preseason All-Conference Team.
"We are very excited to get going with the upcoming season," head coach Kelly Greenberg said. "Our players have battled back from injuries and have really worked hard during the off-season. We feel we have a nice mixture of experience, youth and personalities; it should be a fun year!"
BU finished four points behind UMBC, as the Retrievers received five first-place votes and 60 total points to claim the top spot. Hartford collected the remaining pair of first-place votes and placed third with 54 points. Binghamton (43 points) is fourth, followed by Albany (37), New Hampshire (25) and Vermont (22). Stony Brook (15) and Maine (12) round out the nine-team poll. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Terriers finished the 2010-11 season with a 17-14 record, including a 12-4 mark in conference competition. They return all but one starter from last year's squad that hosted the 2011 America East title game. Eighty-five percent of BU's league-leading offense (62.8 points per game) is back, including Alford's league-best 15.0 ppg. In addition to being named Player of the Year last year, Alford was also named to the AE All-Defensive Team and AE All-Tournament Team.
"Chantell is a terrific player," Greenberg said. "She continues to work hard and get better. She is a pleasure to work with every day. We know how lucky we are to have her here at BU."
Joining Alford will be senior guard Alex Young, who averaged 12.9 ppg, junior guard Mo Moran, a second-team all-conference honoree, who already has two years of experience in distributing the ball and has averaged better than 4.0 apg for her career, and senior forward Caroline Stewart, who averaged a career-best 7.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg.
The 2012 America East Championship first, quarter and semifinal rounds will take place March 1-4 at Hartford's Chase Arena in the Reich Family Pavilion. The highest remaining seed will host the title game the following week with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament where America East teams have wins in three of the last six years.
