BOSTON - Avenging last season's defeat at Quinnipiac, the Boston University men's tennis team swept the defending Northeast Conference champion, 7-0, on Saturday night at the Track and Tennis Center. With the victory, the Terriers (2-2) snapped a two-match losing streak to the Bobcats (0-2) after dropping identical 5-2 contests in 2009 and 2010.
BU showed its determination at the start by capturing the doubles point with two tiebreaker victories. Marcus VanBerkel and Alex Hallenbeck teamed at No. 3 for an 8-5 victory. The last two matches went to the wire, as Josh Friedman and Michael Kopelman pulled out the tiebreaker, 8-6, for the 9-8 win in the top doubles spot. Jesse Frieder and Jarred Pendleton completed the sweep at No. 2, winning 9-8 (7-5).
In singles action, the Terriers showed off their depth, dropping only one set. Kopelman quickly grabbed a point at No. 4 by blanking Alex Lazerowich, 6-0, 6-0. Ferdinand Brunet defeated Corey Morgenstern, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6, and Friedman won the top singles position against Andrew Weeden, 6-1, 6-3.
Frieder, Pendleton and Hallenbeck also won their respective contests to help BU earn its second 7-0 sweep of the season after defeating Holy Cross back in October.
The Terriers will next take the quick trip over to 64th-ranked Harvard for a 5 p.m. start time on Sunday.
