BOSTON - Highlighted by seven contests against teams that qualified for the 2011 postseason, the 2011-12 Boston University women's basketball schedule has been unveiled by head coach Kelly Greenberg. The non-conference portion of the schedule includes a home contest against seven-time MAAC champion Marist as well as road trips to NCAA Second Round participants West Virginia and St. John's.
"We are very excited about our schedule for this upcoming year," said Greenberg. "Our players will be challenged early and often, which is something we thrive on here at BU. We are particularly happy with our home games and look forward to some exciting games in The Roof."
In all, BU will play 13 non-conference games this upcoming season, with four at home, before opening its America East slate with Vermont on Jan. 4. The Terriers will take on challenging competition from powerhouse conferences such as the Atlantic 10, Big East and the Atlantic Coast Conference. They will also take part in the Fordham Holiday Tournament, along with Fordham, Navy and Coppin State on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.
The Terriers will host their season opener on Friday, Nov. 11 when they welcome Big East foe Providence (13-16) to Case Gymnasium in the second game of a doubleheader with the BU men's basketball team. BU will also welcome crosstown rival Northeastern (8-22) on Nov. 22 and Rhode Island (7-21) on Nov. 26. In the last home game of the non-conference schedule, BU will take on Marist (Dec. 10), which is coming off a storybook season in which it won its sixth straight conference title and advanced to the NCAA Second Round.
BU will also play nine road games in non-conference action. The Terriers will face Massachusetts on Nov. 13 before travelling down to Richmond on Nov. 18. BU and Richmond were scheduled to face off last year at the end of December, but a Nor'easter forced the game to be postponed. The Spiders (18-12) went on to make their third straight appearance in the postseason, falling in the WNIT first round.
On Nov. 30, BU will make the short trek across town to take on Ivy League foe Harvard before heading south to face West Virginia (23-10) on Dec. 3. The Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA Second Round after defeating No. 22 Houston, their second NCAA win in as many years.
BU will return to the Northeast on Dec. 7 to face Yale (14-15) in New Haven, Conn., before its home tilt with Marist. The Terriers will close out their non-conference schedule with four straight road games beginning at Boston College Dec. 13. The crosstown rival made it to the third round of the WNIT in 2011.
After the holiday break, BU will regroup and head to the Bronx for the Fordham Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-30. The tournament also features Navy and Coppin State. One day after the tournament concludes, BU will face St. John's (22-11) on Dec. 31 in the non-conference finale. The Red Storm earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year after advancing to the Big East semifinals.
On Jan. 4, the Terriers will begin their quest for an America East championship and subsequent NCAA berth when it ventures to Burlington, Vt., for the conference opener against Vermont. Four days later, the Terriers will take part in a doubleheader at Case Gym with the men's squad when they welcome Binghamton to The Roof on Jan. 8.
BU will also host Maine (Jan. 11), New Hampshire (Jan. 19), Hartford (Jan. 22), UVM (Feb. 1) at Agganis Arena, Stony Brook (Feb. 11), Albany (Feb. 18) and UMBC (Feb. 22). The Terriers will close out the regular season at Hartford on Feb. 25, where they will be looking to avenge a loss in the AE title game. Hartford went on to appear in its sixth NCAA tournament before losing in the first round to top-ranked Connecticut.
The Terriers finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 17-14 overall record and advanced to the America East championship game for seventh time in nine years. BU returns four all-conference team members, including junior Chantell Alford, who became just the sixth player in conference history to earn America East Player of the Year honors as a sophomore.
