
Women's Basketball Opens Conference Play at Vermont

Boston University opens the America East portion of its schedule on Wednesday, Jan, 4, with a trip to Vermont. BU (7-7, 0-0 AE) and Vermont (6-8, 0-1 AE), will tip-off in Patrick Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
The Terriers and Catamounts have met a combined 68 times over the years as BU leads the series, 38-30, and has won 16 of the last 22 contests. BU concluded the 2010-11 regular season with a 75-52 win against UVM before the teams met in the America East Quarterfinals, and BU prevailed again, 62-38.
The Terriers concluded their non-conference schedule with three games in three days in the boroughs of New York City. On Dec. 29 and 30, the Terriers participated in the Fordham Holiday Classic in Bronx, N.Y. BU faced two opponents for the first time in program history, as the Terriers fell to Coppin state, 59-44, in the first round before defeating Navy, 48-46 in the consolation game. The Terriers then traveled to Queens, N.Y., on New Year’s Eve to face BIG EAST opponent St. John’s. BU struggled to overcome a slow offensive start, as the Terriers lost, 75-38. BU concluded its non-conference schedule with a 7-6 record.
For the second-straight game, sophomore Rashidat Agboola led the team in rebounding, as she collected 11 boards. It was the third time this season that she reached double-digits in rebounds. Junior Chantell Alford led the team with 12 points while Agboola and senior Alex Young chipped in eight points each.
Alford leads a trio of Terriers with double-digit scoring averages, as she nets 12.4 ppg, followed by junior Mo Moran (11.1 ppg) and Young (10.3 ppg).
BU struggled to find its offensive rhythm against St. John’s, as the Terriers shot 28.8 percent (15-of-52) en route to a season-low 38 points. The Red Storm won the battle of the boards, 44-27. BU committed 19 turnovers on the afternoon.
Vermont enters Wednesday’s game with a 6-8 overall record and a 0-1 mark in America East play. The Catamounts played their conference opener on Monday night, as they fell, 54-47, to Stony Brook for their seventh straight loss.
Vermont has just one player averaging a double-digit scoring performance, as junior Lauren Buschmann nets 14.4 points per game for the Catamounts. The forward/center is also the team’s leading rebounder with 8.1 boards per game. Freshman Kayla Burchill is second on the team with 9.1 points per game. As a team, the Catamounts have the league’s most prolific offense, as UVm averages 61.2 points per game. The team is also dominant on the boards, averaging a conference-best 40.2 rebounds per game.
Wednesday’s game against Vermont marks the end of a five-game road swing and the Terriers have played seven of their last eight games away from Case Gym. After facing Vermont, BU returns home on Sunday, Jan. 8, to host Binghamton at 1 p.m. The game will be part of a double-header, as the BU men’s team hosts Binghamton at 3 p.m.
