
Men's Tennis Continues Fall Season at ITA Regionals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston University men's tennis team completed its run at the ITA Regional Friday afternoon with two men reaching the round of 64 on the campus of Yale University.
Sophomore Chanon Varapongsittikul started the tournament on Thursday in the qualifying rounds needing two victories to reach the main draw. He first defeated Hofstra's Ari Richman, 6-0, 7-5, and then dropped just two games in a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Fairfield's Dennis Zhlobinsky.
Appearing in the main draw's round of 64, he started off strong by winning the first set, but Niagara's David Raymond rallied back to eliminate Varapongsittikul, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Josh Friedman competed in both the singles and doubles main draw competitions after receiving automatic berths. He suffered a similar fate in a three-set battle against Yale's Jason Brown, who pulled out a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win.
In doubles action, Friedman and senior Michael Kopelman fell to Niagara's Ellortegui and Gallegos by an 8-4 margin.
Junior Jesse Frieder was the fourth Terrier to compete. He was eliminated in the first qualifying round with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Army's Harrison McCormack.
BU will next conclude the fall portion of the 2012-13 schedule on Sunday, Oct. 21, against UConn on the grass surface at the Longwood Club in Brookline. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
