America East Preseason Information
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Boston University women’s basketball team has been selected to finish second in the America East in the 2012-13 regular season, following a vote of the league’s nine head coaches. The Terriers received two first-place votes and 56 total points in the poll the conference office announced on Tuesday at the 2012 America East Men’s and Women’s Basketball Media Day at the SEFCU Arena.
Additionally, senior guard and two-time America East Player of the Year Chantell Alford was a unanimous selection for the AE Preseason All-Conference Team. Classmate Mo Moran joins Alford after earning All-Conference First Team honors last season.
BU finished five points behind Albany, as the Great Danes received five first-place votes and 61 total points to claim the top spot. Hartford collected the remaining pair of first-place votes and placed third with 54 points. New Hampshire and Vermont tied for fourth with 37 points each followed by UMBC (34), Maine (17) and Binghamton (16). Stony Brook (12) rounds out the nine-team poll. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
The Terriers finished the 2011-12 season with a 23-9 record, including a 15-1 mark in conference competition. BU claimed the America East regular season title, after being tabbed to finish second, and received an automatic bid to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
BU returns 70 percent of its offense that ranked second in the league last season (59.9 points per game). The Terriers’ top three scorers, Alford (12.4 ppg), Moran (10.9 ppg) and junior Rashidat Agboola (10.1) ppg all return to the court for BU.
Alford looks to become the first ever three-time America East Player of the Year to cap off her career at BU. In addition to leading last year's team in scoring, she ranked second on the team with 2.6 assists per game and third with 4.7 rebounds per game. She became the 20th player in BU history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark and enters the season eighth all-time with 1,309 points.
Moran started all 32 games last season and finished second in the conference with 4.0 assists per game. Moran also netted her 1,000th career point in her junior campaign.
Overall, head coach Kelly Greenberg returns 10 letter winners and welcomes four newcomers to this year’s squad.
BU opens the 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 9, when the Terriers host crosstown rival Boston College at Case Gym. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
