ANN ARBOR, Mich. –The Boston University women’s basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision to Michigan Saturday afternoon at Crisler Arena. Three players scored in double-digits for BU as the Terriers move to 3-3 on the season while Michigan improves to 5-1.
Senior Kristen Sims led the Terriers with a career-high 19 points, including five made 3-pointers, while classmates Chantell Alford and Mo Moran chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively. Junior Rashidat Agboola and Moran tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.
Michigan was led by Rachel Sheffer’s 18 points. Jenny Ryan was second on the team with 15 points and added eight rebounds while Kate Thompson scored 12 points. Nicole Elmblad led the team with nine rebounds in addition to chipping in nine points.
The Terriers finished the game with a 39.0 field goal percentage while the Wolverines shot 47.9 percent from the field. Michigan held a slight advantage on the boards, out-rebounding BU, 36-31.
BU’s first three field goals of the game all came from beyond the arc and the Terriers held a 9-7 lead at the first timeout taken at 14:46. The Wolverines tied the game at 9-9 with a jumper from Sheffer. The teams then exchanged baskets and the Wolverines took their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer from Thompson at 9:51.
The Terriers regained the advantage with a 3-pointer from Sims four minutes later before the teams traded baskets and the lead. Back-to-back field goals from Sheffer gave Michigan a 28-25 lead with 2:07 to play and the Terriers were held scoreless for the remainder of the half. Michigan took a 31-25 lead into the break.
Michigan took its largest lead of the game thus far early in the second half with a 3-pointer from Ryan to put the Wolverines up, 38-29, at the 15:50 mark. BU chipped away at Michigan’s lead over the next few minutes and used a 3-pointer from Alford and a jumper from Turner to make it a one-point game, 42-41, with 11:16 showing on the clock.
Moran’s jumper then gave the Terriers their first lead of the half but Michigan quickly responded with a basket from Madison Ristovski. Sims answered on the other end with her fourth 3-pointer of the game to keep it a one-point affair but the Wolverines used a quick 7-0 spurt to extend the margin.
Following the final media timeout at 3:51, a jumper from Alford made it a 59-50 game before the Wolverines turned it back to a double-digit lead with another basket from Ristovski. Despite 3-pointers from Sims and Danielle Callahan in the final minutes of the game, the Terriers could not overcome the deficit and Michigan held on for a 67-58 victory.
The Terriers conclude their four-game road swing on Tuesday (Nov. 27) with a trip to Kingston, R.I., to face Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
